Spark Allocates $100 Million to Superstate’s Crypto Carry Fund as DeFi Chases Yields Beyond U.S. Treasuries
Spark invests $100M in Superstate’s Crypto Carry Fund, chasing DeFi yields as Treasury returns fall.
In a strategic bid to sustain attractive returns amid declining Treasury yields, decentralized finance protocol Spark has invested $100 million into Superstate’s Crypto Carry Fund (USCC). The move, announced on October 23, underscores a growing shift within the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector toward yield-generating strategies tied to crypto-based arbitrage rather than traditional government securities.
Superstate’s USCC fund employs a market-neutral “basis trade” strategy, capturing profit opportunities between spot and futures prices for major crypto assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. These spreads—known as the basis—form the foundation of the fund’s yield generation. With a reported 9.26% 30-day yield, the USCC fund currently outpaces U.S. Treasury bonds, which have seen their returns fall to six-month lows amid cooling inflation expectations and monetary policy adjustments.
For Spark, whose USDS stablecoin reserve exceeds $9 billion, the allocation represents an effort to preserve the protocol’s competitiveness in a market where DeFi yields have been tightening. The investment will help sustain returns for holders of sUSDS, Spark’s savings token, ensuring continued user engagement even as the appeal of tokenized Treasury products wanes.
“The current macro environment has compressed returns across traditional fixed-income instruments,” said a source familiar with the matter. “DeFi protocols like Spark are now seeking alternative yet risk-managed yield channels that can outperform Treasuries while maintaining liquidity and transparency.”
This allocation aligns with Spark’s broader diversification strategy under the Sky ecosystem, a suite of interconnected DeFi protocols aiming to unify liquidity and drive real-world asset tokenization. Earlier this year, Spark made $1.1 billion in allocations to Ethena’s USDe and sUSDe tokens, $25 million to Maple Finance’s lending pools, and launched a $1 billion Tokenization Grand Prix to accelerate the adoption of tokenized assets across the DeFi landscape.
By integrating with Superstate’s regulated on-chain fund structure, Spark is not only enhancing its yield profile but also contributing to a broader trend of convergence between traditional finance and blockchain-based infrastructure. The collaboration exemplifies how institutional-grade yield strategies are increasingly finding their way into decentralized liquidity systems, bridging two financial worlds that have long evolved in parallel.
Meanwhile, in a related development, CleanSpark, Inc., one of the largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining firms in the United States, announced a separate $100 million Bitcoin-backed credit facility via Coinbase Prime. The company plans to use the financing to expand its mining operations, strengthen its energy portfolio, and advance investments in high-performance computing infrastructure.
Together, these developments highlight a growing appetite across both DeFi and traditional sectors for innovative capital deployment strategies that can withstand the volatility of global interest rates while maximizing yield efficiency.
