Kraken Parent Payward and Clients Buy Undisclosed Amount of AAVE
Kraken parent Payward and its asset management clients bought an undisclosed amount of AAVE through an affiliated fund. The deal is tokens only, unlike June talks that included a 15% equity stake in Aave Group, and the two sides are exploring collaboration.
Kraken's parent company now holds a position in Aave's token, though nobody outside the deal knows how large it is. Payward and its asset management clients bought an undisclosed amount of AAVE, according to an announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, which gave neither a dollar figure nor a token count.
The purchases ran through Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, an investment fund affiliated with Payward, and through the company's asset management clients. The tokens were bought on the secondary market, meaning on open markets rather than directly from Aave, and Wyoming-based Payward said it may make further purchases. The deal involves tokens only, with no equity component mentioned. Payward is buying exposure to the protocol's token, not a slice of the company that develops it.
The statement said Payward and Aave are exploring opportunities to collaborate, without adding details. A person familiar with the matter described the choice to buy on the market rather than from Aave directly as a "signal of alignment" and as "paving the way for future collaboration."
A different shape from the June talks
The structure departs from the one discussed earlier this year. Talks first reported in June 2026 involved 250,000 AAVE tokens plus a 15% common equity stake in Aave Group at a $385 million valuation, an arrangement that was ultimately not realized. Aave founder Stani Kulechov publicly pushed back at the time on claims that the offering undervalued the AAVE token.
Thursday's purchase drops the equity piece entirely.
Without a disclosed amount, its scale cannot be judged. A modest allocation and a massive one would both fit the announcement.
Fit with Payward's strategy
The investment advances Payward's asset management business, one of four pillars alongside trading, banking and Payward Services. Kraken has also reportedly been building toward DeFi through the year, launching its DeFi Earn product in January 2026 and deploying a white-label Aave instance on its Layer-2 network Ink, though those details rest on thinner sourcing than the purchase itself.
Tokenized assets are a second point of overlap. Kraken's xStocks catalog passed 1,000 instruments as of October 22, while Aave will use Chainlink's 24/7 pricing feeds on its Horizon market, starting with heavily traded US stocks. Both firms are building in the same territory, which makes a deeper tie plausible, but for now the announcement commits to nothing beyond the token purchases and continued talks.
