Solana's 200ms slot target goes live on mainnet at epoch 1053

Anza confirmed that Solana's 200ms slot target went live on 9 October 2026, completing SIMD-0525. Block cadence doubled against genesis, but capacity per second is roughly unchanged.

Anza, the team that builds the Agave validator client, confirmed that Solana's 200ms slot time went live on mainnet-beta at epoch 1053 on 9 October 2026. The change completes SIMD-0525 and, at the 200ms target, doubles block cadence against the 400ms genesis setting. It does not double processing capacity.

How the rollout worked

The 200ms step is the last of four reductions under SIMD-0525. Since August, the target slot time has moved from 400ms to 350ms, 300ms, 250ms and now 200ms. The previous step, from 300ms to 250ms, came on 18 September, according to ChainCatcher. CoinInsider describes the whole rollout as a seven-week process.

On 7 October, Anza said the 200ms feature gate was pending on mainnet-beta. The gate was pending in epoch 1051 and active in epoch 1052. SIMD-0525 builds in a one-epoch delay, so 200ms slots began at the epoch 1053 boundary. Brennan Watt of Anza authored the SIMD text. Solana Compass puts the 9 October confirmation at 14:42 UTC, shortly after the epoch boundary.

Solana Compass reports that all four SIMD-0525 feature gates show as "Live" on the slot-time upgrade page on solana.com. Anza's post called SIMD-0525 "mission accomplished", per Solana Compass.

Target versus measured

The 200ms figure is the protocol's intended slot time. CryptoDaily, citing Solana Compass epoch data, reports that the first full epoch after activation lasted 26.2 hours. It averaged 218.3ms per slot, above the target.

That fits an earlier pattern. Solana Compass noted at activation that the three previous steps each ran 15–19ms above their targets.

What does not change

Per-slot compute limits were reduced in step with slot time. Total execution capacity per second is therefore roughly unchanged. At a 200ms target, Solana has five block-production opportunities per second, versus 2.5 at 400ms. That is a theoretical rate, not a measured one.

Measured against the prior 250ms setting, the change is a 20% cut in slot time. The gain is shorter cadence, not throughput.

Validator and epoch effects

Per the Solana Foundation's validator economics overview, as cited by CryptoDaily, the four-slot leader window shrinks to 800ms from 1.6 seconds. Validators also vote roughly twice as often per unit of wall-clock time. Anza's post, as reported by Solana Compass, says an epoch now lasts about a day instead of two; the first full epoch measured 26.2 hours.

What comes next

Alpenglow, Solana's planned consensus upgrade, targets around 150ms finality. It has no mainnet launch date. CryptoRank reports that Jacob Creech of the Solana Foundation highlighted the 200ms release.

Market context

SOL traded at $109.30 on 11 October, with a market capitalisation of $64.39 billion. As of 11 October, Solana's DeFi TVL stood at $6.19 billion, third among chains. Ethereum led with $51.38 billion, followed by Base at $6.21 billion.
