Lido adds direct ETH staking from four L2s to its main interface

Lido announced on October 15, 2026 that Arbitrum, Base, Linea and Optimism users can stake ETH from stake.lido.fi and receive wstETH. Chainlink CCIP coordinates the flow, which builds on a 2024 design.

Lido announced on October 15, 2026 that users on Arbitrum, Base, Linea and Optimism can stake ETH directly from its main staking interface, stake.lido.fi. A single transaction returns wstETH, and Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) coordinates the cross-chain steps. The release extends a CCIP-based design Lido first launched in 2024 and places four chains inside Lido's own staking interface.

How the flow works

According to ChainCatcher, users receive wstETH on their originating network without manually moving ETH to Ethereum and back.

The mechanism, as reported, has four steps:

  • ETH deposited on the L2 is swapped for wstETH from a dedicated liquidity pool on that same L2.
  • The deposited ETH is bridged to Ethereum mainnet and staked through Lido.
  • The resulting wstETH returns to the L2 to replenish the local pool.
  • CCIP carries the instructions and transfers between networks, according to TokenPost.

Staking itself still happens on Ethereum mainnet. Per Lido's statement as reported by ChainCatcher, the Chainlink price feed used for the pool swap reflects Lido's protocol exchange rate, not the exchange-market price.

What is new

Lido's blog announced CCIP-powered Direct Staking rails in 2024, starting with Arbitrum, Base and Optimism. A Lido X post dated November 1, 2024 said CCIP was powering them. Before that, L2 holders had to swap ETH for wstETH on an exchange and accept slippage. The alternative was bridging ETH to mainnet, a process that could take up to 7 days, then staking and bridging wstETH back.

The October 2024 blog said DeFi front ends including XSwap, OpenOcean and Interport were adopting Direct Staking. Several outlets report that Linea was added in October 2025, but this has not been confirmed against a Lido primary source. The 2026 announcement describes access from Lido's main staking interface across four chains.

Fees

Users pay transaction fees on the L2, according to CoinGape. Cross-chain costs are reportedly covered by separately funded contract balances, not by staking deposits. CoinGape reports that Lido keeps 10% of staking rewards and users keep 90%. This figure was not checked against Lido documentation.

Market context

As of October 15, 2026, Lido's total value locked was $22.92 billion on DefiLlama. wstETH traded at $2,907.91 with a market cap of $10.70 billion. LDO traded at $0.378, ETH at about $2,337 and LINK at $11.88.

For context, DefiLlama showed total chain TVL (not Lido-specific) of $6.05 billion on Base, $1.36 billion on Arbitrum and $23.29 million on Linea. No Optimism figure is cited because the data looked unreliable.

What is not yet known

Pool sizes, deposit limits and the CCIP lanes used on each chain have not been disclosed in the sources reviewed. No launch-day staking volume has been reported. This brief relies on secondary outlets, because Lido's own October 2026 post could not be reviewed.

Based on the reported mechanism, the route relies on CCIP and on local L2 liquidity pools to supply wstETH.
