Coinbase and Marqeta are expanding their partnership to power stablecoin-backed payment cards for enterprise customers, Crypto Briefing reported on October 16, 2026. According to that report, the two companies announced the deal the same day. Per the report, cards funded from a stablecoin account could be used at any merchant that accepts traditional cards.

This brief relies on that report. The primary announcement was not reviewed, so the deal terms below are attributed to Crypto Briefing.

Who does what

Per Crypto Briefing, Coinbase would take custody of the stablecoin balances and convert them into fiat currency. It would also run on-chain settlement through Base, its own blockchain.

Marqeta would issue the cards, process payments, and manage relationships with financial institutions and card networks.

24/7 funding and ordinary merchants

Programs built on the partnership are described as supporting 24/7 funding, the report says. Companies could top up card programs outside banking hours.

Crypto Briefing says cardholders could spend at any merchant that accepts traditional cards. The stablecoin account sits behind the card, and the merchant sees a normal card transaction.

Per Crypto Briefing, Marqeta is targeting two audiences. One is crypto-native companies that already hold digital assets. The other is traditional firms that want to fold such assets into fiat payment operations.

What is not disclosed

Neither company disclosed volume or revenue figures tied to the expanded deal, according to the report. Launch timing and whether any card program is live were not established in the material reviewed.

Supported stablecoins, supported regions and customers are not established in the material reviewed.

Market context

DefiLlama data shows total stablecoin supply at $305.99 billion on October 16. USDT accounts for $183.48 billion (60.0%) and USDC for $72.60 billion (23.7%).

Base, the chain that would handle settlement, had a TVL of $6.19 billion that day. That made it the second-largest chain by TVL, behind Ethereum at $50.48 billion and just ahead of Solana at $6.03 billion.

These figures describe the market backdrop. They do not measure activity from this deal.
