Anza and Solana Foundation schedule Alpenglow mainnet switch for Oct 21

Anza and the Solana Foundation have scheduled Alpenglow to replace TowerBFT on Solana mainnet on Oct 21, and the Foundation lists the activation as epoch 1064. The roughly 150 ms finality figure is a protocol target, not a measured mainnet result.

Anza and the Solana Foundation have both scheduled Alpenglow, Solana's new consensus layer, to replace TowerBFT on mainnet-beta on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The Foundation lists the activation as epoch 1064. Finality is targeted to fall from about 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds, but that gain has not been shown under full mainnet conditions.

What is confirmed

Anza, the team behind the Agave validator client, announced the go-live on October 13. It put the switch at about 14:50 UTC. The Solana Foundation's Alpenglow page says epoch 1064 starts at approximately 15:00 UTC. The sources differ slightly: Anza says about 14:50 UTC and the Foundation says the epoch starts at about 15:00 UTC. Per TokenPost, the feature gate activates at the epoch boundary, and TowerBFT then continues for 5,000 slots (about 18 minutes) before Alpenglow takes over, so the actual consensus handoff would come after the epoch start.

What changes

Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT's voting mechanism with Votor. Validators confirm consensus through direct communication and summarised records, rather than writing every vote on-chain. TowerBFT, the consensus protocol Solana has run since genesis, is being replaced.

How the switch works

The migration is a handoff on a running network, with no restart. A feature gate activates at an epoch boundary. TowerBFT then continues for 5,000 slots (about 18 minutes). Alpenglow is expected to take over at slot 459,653,000. TokenPost notes the epoch start time is an estimate because epoch timing can shift.

The mechanism is specified in SIMD-0384. Solana Compass reports that Anza's page lists testnet (September 24) and devnet (September 25) as completed. The Solana Foundation page marks Alpenglow as a breaking change and lists the devnet activation as epoch 1167 at 19:30 UTC on September 25.

What validators need

The Validator Admission Ticket (SIMD-0357) activated on mainnet on July 22. Operators who have not registered a BLS pubkey on-chain are excluded from the admitted validator set and stop participating in consensus. Operators also need an Agave-based client built on Agave 4.3.0. They need at least 0.8 SOL above the vote account's rent-exempt minimum to cover the VAT fee.

What stays the same

This activation covers voting and finality only. It does not alter Solana's execution environment, transactions, programs or fee model. Rotor, a later phase planned to replace the Turbine block-data distribution system, has no scheduled release date.

Market context

SOL traded at $102.86 as of 14:00 UTC on October 18, with a market cap of $60.65 billion (CoinGecko). Solana's DeFi TVL stood at $5.95 billion on October 18, third among chains behind Ethereum ($49.75 billion) and Base ($6.14 billion), according to DefiLlama.

Yahoo Finance reported on October 15 that SOL traded near $107, down roughly 9% on the week. It said price action showed limited reaction to the fixed date. Analysts cited there treat Alpenglow as a medium-term catalyst rather than an instant price driver.

What to watch

On October 21, watch whether the handoff completes at the expected slot and whether validators stay in consensus. Real finality times under mainnet load can only be measured after Alpenglow takes over, which is expected about 18 minutes after the epoch boundary.
