Zerebro’s Jeffy Yu Reportedly Found Alive After Faking Death That Triggered $100M Memecoin Frenzy
Jeffy Yu, co-founder of Zerebro, reportedly staged his death, sparking a $100M memecoin surge before being found alive.
In a stunning twist to one of the most surreal stories in the crypto world, Jeffy Yu—the 22-year-old co-founder of the AI-driven memecoin project Zerebro—has reportedly been found alive just days after staging his own death. His disappearance triggered a speculative surge in a memecoin linked to his name, which briefly reached a $100 million market cap before collapsing.
Yu was located at his parents’ home in San Francisco, where he appeared disoriented and distressed. Confronted outside the residence, he expressed concern over his personal safety, stating, “If you can find me, others can too… Now I have to move my parents out of here this week.”
His apparent suicide had been announced through a widely-shared video, accompanied by a digital obituary describing him as a "visionary artist, technologist, and cultural force." A scheduled message followed, triggered by a supposed “deadman’s switch,” in which Yu declared he had created one final art piece: a “legacy coin” calledLLJEFFY.
He emphasized that LLJEFFY was “not an investment, not a security… no advertising, no speculation. Nothing but voluntary action.” The Solana-based token soared to a market cap of $105 million within days of the video’s release.
However, suspicions quickly mounted. Blockchain data revealed that wallets associated with Yu had moved over $1.4 million in crypto following his alleged death. This discovery sparked widespread accusations of a staged event intended to manipulate the market. LLJEFFY subsequently plummeted by more than 98% in value.
Adding to the doubts, local death records showed no individuals named Yu had passed away during the relevant period. The obituary and video were both removed, though fragments continue to circulate within the crypto community. A purported letter from Yu also surfaced, reportedly admitting to the hoax.
At the time of his discovery, Yu declined to comment on the memecoin, the video, or any financial activities tied to them. Wearing casual clothes and appearing visibly shaken, he told a reporter, “You can see the PTSD in my eyes, right?” before ending the conversation.
Yu’s social media presence has since vanished, and the episode has reignited debates about ethics, accountability, and manipulation in the memecoin space—a volatile sector where fiction and finance often collide.
