Zcash’s Breakout Rally Puts Monero’s Privacy Coin Dominance Under Pressure
Zcash surges 75% in a month, breaking its 8-year downtrend and emerging as a real challenger to Monero’s privacy coin supremacy.
After nearly a decade of steady decline, Zcash (ZEC) has staged an unexpected comeback that is rattling the long-held dominance of Monero (XMR) in the privacy coin market. In just one month, ZEC has soared more than 70%, briefly crossing the $70 threshold and recording a market capitalization above $1.1 billion.
Trading volume provides a stark indicator of this shift. ZEC’s daily turnover recently exceeded $215 million, surpassing Monero’s $128 million, a milestone that underscores renewed investor attention. According to data from TradingView, ZEC notched weekly gains of 42% and monthly growth of 73%, levels unseen since its early years.
Analysts point to a pivotal development behind this surge: the September 16 launch of Zashi Cross Pay. The new product enables private, cross-chain transactions from shielded ZEC wallets to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins. By extending privacy functionality across multiple chains, Zcash has effectively expanded its relevance beyond its own ecosystem.
This innovation has not gone unnoticed by institutions. As regulators across major jurisdictions intensify scrutiny on transparent blockchains, privacy-focused solutions are increasingly attractive to investors. Zcash’s foundation on zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) makes it a uniquely positioned asset for those seeking comprehensive confidentiality. Google search data further supports the trend: queries for “privacy coins” have hit new highs, with ZEC leading in global search interest.
The rally is also winning endorsements from industry leaders. Helius Lab’s CEO, known simply as Mert, has expressed a preference for Zcash over Monero, citing what he views as Monero’s “weaker privacy properties.” For years, Monero has been the unchallenged standard for private transactions, but the tone of expert commentary suggests that balance may be changing.
ZEC’s technical outlook reinforces this optimism. The token has broken out of a multi-year falling wedge pattern, a bullish signal in chart analysis. Momentum indicators—including a rising MACD histogram and a high relative strength index—suggest continued upward potential. Short-term targets hover between $70 and $78, with a possible push to $98 if momentum sustains. Analysts also highlight $81.81 as a critical resistance point, drawn from prior highs in 2021 and 2022.
Despite the euphoria, caution remains warranted. Markets often retrace after sharp rallies, and profit-taking could bring temporary pullbacks. Still, the narrative around Zcash has shifted fundamentally: from a stagnant project overshadowed by Monero, to an asset reasserting its relevance with innovative use cases. If the momentum holds, Zcash may not only continue to rival Monero but also redefine the trajectory of the privacy coin sector as regulatory debates over digital privacy intensify.
