XRP’s price may be under pressure, but its infrastructure story is moving in the opposite direction. A new collaboration between Hex Trust and LayerZero is extending XRP’s reach beyond its native ledger, introducing wrapped XRP on Solana and opening the door to broader decentralized finance participation.

The newly launched asset, known as wXRP, represents native XRP on a one-to-one basis and is fully backed by XRP held in segregated custody. The initial deployment on Solana is designed as the first step in a wider multi-chain expansion, with additional networks expected to follow. For XRP, long associated with payments and enterprise use cases, the move signals a deliberate push into DeFi environments where liquidity, composability, and yield opportunities dominate.

At the core of the structure is Hex Trust’s custody framework. Native XRP backing wXRP is held under institutional-grade standards, with auditability, insurance coverage, and compliance safeguards built into the design. Authorized participants are responsible for minting and redeeming the token, ensuring that the circulating supply of wXRP always matches the XRP held in custody. When redemptions occur, tokens are burned, preserving parity and limiting dilution risk.

LayerZero provides the technical backbone that allows wXRP to move across blockchains. By using its Omnichain Fungible Token standard, the wrapped asset can circulate between supported networks without relying on traditional bridges, which have often been criticized for security vulnerabilities. This approach is aimed at giving both institutions and DeFi users consistent exposure to XRP while interacting with applications across different ecosystems.

The launch is backed by meaningful liquidity from the outset. Hex Trust plans to introduce wXRP with more than $100 million in total value locked, a level intended to support stable trading conditions and early DeFi adoption. Solana serves as the initial venue, chosen for its high throughput and active DeFi ecosystem, but expansion plans include Ethereum, Optimism, HyperEVM, and other networks. Each additional deployment extends XRP’s access to new pools of liquidity and new classes of users.

The initiative also aligns with Ripple’s broader strategy around regulated on-chain finance. Executives involved in the rollout have highlighted the growing demand to use XRP outside the XRP Ledger, particularly alongside RLUSD. The ability to pair XRP with a regulated stablecoin across multiple chains strengthens the case for XRP as a functional asset within DeFi rather than a token confined to a single network.

From a use-case perspective, wXRP enables activities that were previously difficult or impossible for XRP holders. These include swaps, liquidity provision, and rewards mechanisms within established DeFi protocols. Institutions, in particular, gain a pathway to participate in these markets under a compliance-focused framework, avoiding the trade-offs often associated with unregulated bridges or synthetic exposure.

The timing is notable. XRP has struggled to regain momentum in the market, trading below recent highs even as development activity accelerates. The launch of wXRP follows recent upgrades to the XRP Ledger and reflects a broader effort to position XRP as a cross-chain asset capable of operating within modern DeFi stacks.

Price action may lag, but infrastructure rarely does. With wrapped XRP now live on Solana and a multi-chain roadmap in place, XRP’s functional footprint is expanding well beyond its original boundaries.
