The State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) has fully divested its $350 million position in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), marking a swift and complete retreat from direct bitcoin ETF exposure in just one quarter.

Once celebrated as a pioneering institutional investor in spot bitcoin ETFs, SWIB’s move highlights a rapid change in sentiment amid a 12% price dip for the cryptocurrency during Q1 2025. At the end of 2024, the board held over six million IBIT shares, but those are now absent from its latest 13F regulatory filing.

This sudden reversal comes on the heels of an aggressive accumulation strategy just months earlier, when SWIB more than doubled its IBIT holdings from 2.9 million to over six million shares. The selloff suggests growing caution or a strategic reallocation of crypto exposure.

While exiting its IBIT position, SWIB increased its indirect exposure to bitcoin by acquiring 26,571 shares of MicroStrategy (MSTR), the software company widely regarded as a corporate bitcoin proxy. This $10.5 million investment indicates a shift in approach—moving from ETF-based exposure to equities that benefit from bitcoin's long-term potential.

SWIB, which manages over $160 billion in assets for Wisconsin’s public employees, is among the most closely watched state investment boards in the U.S. Its brief foray into bitcoin ETFs, followed by a swift exit, reflects the volatile nature of institutional sentiment in crypto markets.

In contrast, other institutional players remain undeterred. Mubadala Investments, the sovereign wealth fund of Abu Dhabi, increased its IBIT stake in the same quarter, purchasing over 490,000 shares valued at roughly $29 million.

Since the end of Q1, bitcoin has rebounded by 27%, trading near $103,750. Whether SWIB’s move was premature or prescient remains to be seen, but it underscores the complex calculus facing institutional investors navigating the volatile world of crypto assets.
