Western Union Enters the Stablecoin Arena with Anchorage Digital, Launching USDPT on Solana
Western Union partners with Anchorage Digital to launch USDPT, a Solana-based stablecoin for faster global payments.
In a landmark move that bridges traditional finance and blockchain innovation, Western Union has partnered with Anchorage Digital Bank—the first federally regulated crypto bank in the United States—to launch a stablecoin called USDPT (U.S. Dollar Payment Token). Designed to deliver faster, cheaper, and more inclusive cross-border transactions, USDPT marks Western Union’s entry into digital asset payments and signals a major step toward mainstream stablecoin adoption.
Built on Solana’s high-performance blockchain, USDPT will leverage the network’s scalability, low fees, and high transaction throughput to facilitate real-time settlements across Western Union’s vast global infrastructure. The company’s network spans more than 150 countries and 550,000 agent locations, giving it unmatched physical reach that could connect millions of users to digital payment rails.
Anchorage Digital Bank, operating under federal regulation, will issue and redeem USDPT while maintaining oversight for custody, compliance, and treasury management. This structure ensures that the stablecoin meets U.S. financial standards, addressing one of the central concerns that has slowed broader institutional adoption of digital currencies.
“The partnership between Western Union and Anchorage Digital shows how regulated stablecoins can power faster, cheaper, and more inclusive payments globally,” said Nathan McCauley, co-founder and CEO of Anchorage Digital. “By combining forces and building on Solana, we’re demonstrating that innovation and compliance can coexist in the evolution of global money movement.”
For Western Union, the collaboration reflects a strategic pivot toward digital transformation. Devin McGranahan, CEO of Western Union, emphasized that USDPT represents a “meaningful step toward faster, more efficient, and more inclusive payments” for customers worldwide. The company’s existing global footprint provides a powerful on-ramp for users who may not yet have access to crypto wallets or digital banking infrastructure.
The choice of Solana as the blockchain foundation underscores the network’s growing reputation for institutional-grade performance. With transaction speeds averaging tens of thousands per second and minimal fees, Solana has become a preferred network for payment applications seeking scalability and cost efficiency. Sheraz Shere, head of payments at Solana, highlighted the significance of the partnership, noting that “USDPT demonstrates how high-performance blockchain technology and regulatory compliance can work hand in hand to transform global payments.”
Together, Western Union’s global reach, Anchorage Digital’s regulatory rigor, and Solana’s technical capacity set a new precedent for the future of cross-border finance. USDPT positions itself as a bridge between fiat and crypto economies, combining the trust of traditional banking with the efficiency of blockchain technology. If successful, this initiative could accelerate the institutional acceptance of stablecoins as reliable tools for global payment systems—paving the way for a new era of regulated, borderless money movement.
