Online brokerage Webull has reopened cryptocurrency trading for its U.S. customers, ending a two-year suspension that began in 2023 amid regulatory pressures. The move, announced on August 25, marks a significant step in Webull’s broader strategy to position itself as a global multi-asset platform while navigating the shifting U.S. regulatory landscape for digital assets.

Webull, which serves more than 24 million users worldwide, now allows access to over 50 cryptocurrencies, including leading tokens such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. The company has already been offering crypto trading services in Brazil since June, and executives suggested that additional markets could be added soon.

The relaunch comes after Webull temporarily scaled back its crypto operations in 2023, a decision largely driven by scrutiny from federal securities regulators. At the time, the brokerage was preparing for its special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger and eventual listing on Nasdaq, which required restructuring to emphasize compliance and operational efficiency. Webull successfully debuted on the exchange in April 2025, and its renewed focus on crypto signals a new chapter in its growth strategy.

Anthony Denier, U.S. CEO and Group President at Webull, emphasized that the return of crypto trading reflects the firm’s mission to integrate multiple asset classes into a single platform. “By reintegrating crypto trading into the Webull app, we are making it easier for customers to access and manage their entire portfolio, whether they’re trading stocks, options, or digital assets,” Denier said. He added that the update reduces friction for investors and provides a seamless experience for navigating diverse investment opportunities.

Echoing this view, Stephen Yip, CEO of Webull Pay, argued that crypto has become an essential element of modern portfolio diversification. He explained that by reintroducing digital asset trading, Webull is aiming to offer investors a unified and convenient environment where traditional securities and cryptocurrencies coexist.

The timing of the relaunch is notable as regulatory clarity around digital assets in the U.S. continues to evolve. While uncertainty remains, recent developments suggest a more defined framework is emerging, which could encourage more mainstream financial institutions to expand into the sector. Webull’s decision to reenter the space reflects a calculated bet that regulatory momentum is shifting in favor of stable, compliant crypto trading platforms.

The move also sharpens competition with Robinhood, Webull’s most visible rival in the retail brokerage market. Robinhood has offered crypto trading since 2018 and went public in 2021, carving out a sizable share of the U.S. retail crypto trading market. Webull’s expanded offering of 50 digital assets positions it as a direct challenger, with the potential to lure users seeking a single app for both equities and crypto.

For Webull, the restoration of U.S. crypto trading is not merely a return to form but a signal of long-term ambition. By merging traditional finance and digital assets into one platform, the company is betting that the future of investing will be defined by flexibility, integration, and accessibility.
