Vitalik Buterin's Vision for a Leaner Ethereum Could Reshape the Blockchain’s Future
Vitalik Buterin proposes a simpler, more efficient Ethereum to boost scalability and reclaim its dominance in the evolving blockchain landscape.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is spearheading a new direction for the blockchain platform, proposing a simplified architecture aimed at boosting efficiency, scalability, and long-term sustainability. His plan is inspired by Bitcoin’s minimalist design and seeks to make Ethereum more accessible without compromising on power or functionality.
According to Buterin, simplicity in architecture is closely linked to decentralization. “Simplicity is in many ways similar to decentralization,” he explained, emphasizing the need for a more minimal and streamlined system. At the core of his proposal is the concept of “3-slot finality,” a major update to Ethereum’s consensus layer.
This new model seeks to replace some of the network’s more complex mechanisms, including epochs, sync committees, and validator shuffling. The goal is to reduce computational overhead and make the protocol easier to understand and manage, both for developers and for users interacting with decentralized applications (dApps).
Buterin believes that by minimizing the number of active validators at any given time, the network becomes more secure and simpler to maintain. “The reduced number of active validators at a time means that it becomes safer to use simpler implementations of the fork choice rule,” he stated.
Another major pillar of Buterin’s plan involves replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with a new execution layer that’s more compatible with zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. He proposes transitioning to RISC-V, an open-source instruction set architecture known for its simplicity and efficiency. The shift could dramatically speed up performance for ZK-based applications, potentially increasing efficiency by up to 100 times.
The transition wouldn’t be immediate. Legacy EVM contracts would continue to function through a RISC-V interpreter, ensuring compatibility while the ecosystem adapts to the new standard. This balance between innovation and backward compatibility is a central theme in Buterin’s vision.
He’s also pushing for unified standards across the Ethereum ecosystem. These include a single erasure coding method and a consistent serialization format—likely Simple Serialize (SSZ)—to streamline infrastructure and tooling. Buterin recommends introducing a cap on the number of lines of consensus-critical code to reduce technical debt and make the protocol easier to audit and maintain.
This strategic simplification comes at a pivotal time for Ethereum. At the LONGITUDE by Cointelegraph event, industry voices acknowledged Ethereum’s waning dominance. Alex Svanevik, CEO of Nansen, remarked, “If you’d asked me 3–4 years ago whether Ethereum would dominate crypto, I’d have said yes. But now, it’s clear that’s not what’s happening.”
Buterin’s proposals aim to address this shift in sentiment by refining Ethereum’s foundation. By focusing on core efficiency and accessibility, the network could re-establish itself as the leading platform for decentralized innovation.
His vision, if realized, may not only fortify Ethereum’s technical infrastructure but also revitalize its market position amid growing competition. In an ecosystem crowded with complexity, Buterin is betting on simplicity as the path to resilience.
