Despite its longstanding skepticism toward digital assets, investment behemoth Vanguard has emerged as a significant indirect holder of Bitcoin-linked equities. The firm, which manages over $10.4 trillion in assets, now holds more than 20 million shares in Strategy—a leading public company known for its substantial Bitcoin treasury.

According to Bloomberg, this shareholding likely makes Vanguard the largest institutional investor in Strategy, surpassing Capital Group Companies in late 2024. The irony is notable, given that Vanguard has consistently argued that cryptocurrencies lack intrinsic value and do not belong in a traditional investment portfolio composed of equities, bonds, and cash.

This exposure is not a result of active investment decisions but rather a structural outcome of Vanguard's index-tracking funds. These passive mutual funds and ETFs are obligated to include stocks that meet specific criteria related to market capitalization, listing, geography, and sector classification. As Strategy's market cap has surged alongside Bitcoin's ascent, it has found its way into major indexes—and therefore, into Vanguard's portfolio.

"Vanguard chose this life. When you have an index fund, you have to own all the stocks, for better or worse," commented Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. "That includes stocks that you may not like or approve of personally."

Vanguard has been vocal about avoiding direct involvement in the crypto market. It declined to launch a spot Bitcoin ETF, even as competitors rushed to capitalize on new investor demand. Nonetheless, the firm’s current Strategy stake represents a de facto exposure to Bitcoin that contradicts its public position.

Interestingly, there are signs of possible softening. In January, Balchunas speculated that Vanguard may eventually shift its stance on Bitcoin ETFs. For now, however, the firm remains the ultimate paradox: a crypto-skeptic giant inadvertently backing Bitcoin through the structural machinery of passive investing.
