Vangrid Raises $9M in Token Round for Spatial Data Network

Vangrid, a DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) project targeting robotics and defense applications, has closed a $9 million token round to build a decentralized spatial data network designed for physical AI systems.

The funding will support infrastructure that enables AI to process and act on real-world spatial information, such as the three-dimensional, constantly changing environments that autonomous robots and defense systems must navigate. Rather than relying on centralized data providers, Vangrid's model distributes data collection and validation across a network of contributors, who are currently paid bounties. A formal token launch is planned for later in 2026.

The distinction between spatial data for physical AI and conventional mapping or geospatial data is significant. Traditional mapping products, including those from Google, produce relatively static representations of the world. Physical AI, by contrast, requires continuous, dynamic environmental data to make real-time decisions: a warehouse robot repositioning around a fallen object, or a defense drone recalculating a flight path. Vangrid's bet is that a decentralized contributor network can generate that kind of high-frequency, high-resolution data more efficiently than any single company can.

That bet carries real execution risk. Decentralized infrastructure models have historically struggled to meet the latency and reliability requirements of real-time applications. The defense sector adds complexity: regulatory uncertainty around AI in military contexts could slow adoption regardless of how well the underlying technology performs. Centralized competitors, including proprietary robotics platforms and established mapping providers, hold significant infrastructure advantages that a $9 million raise does not immediately close.

The DePIN category has produced credible precedents. Helium built a functioning wireless network through token-incentivized hardware deployment. Render Network distributed GPU compute across thousands of nodes. Livepeer created a decentralized video transcoding market. Each demonstrated that community-driven infrastructure can reach meaningful scale when token economics align contributor incentives with network demand. Vangrid is applying that playbook to a newer and technically harder problem.

The $9 million round follows a recognizable DePIN fundraising pattern: raise capital before token distribution, use bounties to bootstrap contributor supply, then transition to on-chain incentives once the network has enough activity to sustain itself. The sequencing reduces the risk of launching a token into a thin or inactive network, though the project's long-term economics remain untested.

Investor appetite for DePIN infrastructure has remained durable through 2025 and into 2026, even as broader crypto funding cycles have tightened. Projects that credibly connect decentralized infrastructure to high-value real-world use cases, particularly in AI, have attracted capital at a pace that more speculative token launches have not. Vangrid's focus on physical AI, a sector drawing significant non-crypto investment from robotics companies and defense contractors, positions it at an intersection increasingly attracting attention from both sides.
