Trump Media Bets Big on Crypto With $105 Million CRO Acquisition
Trump Media invests $105M in CRO, integrating the token into Truth Social and creating a $6.42B crypto treasury.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the company behind Truth Social and closely associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump, has made its boldest move yet into the cryptocurrency sector. On September 6, the group announced the purchase of 684.4 million Cronos (CRO) tokens, worth approximately $105 million, in a strategic partnership with Crypto.com.
The acquisition, priced at $0.153 per token, represents roughly 2% of CRO’s circulating supply. According to company executives, the tokens will be central to a new incentive ecosystem across the Truth Social platform and the soon-to-launch Truth+ streaming service. Integration with the Crypto.com wallet is expected to streamline payments, rewards, and user engagement.
To manage this new crypto exposure, TMTG also revealed the formation of Trump Media Group CRO Strategy, Inc., a dedicated subsidiary tasked with overseeing a massive $6.42 billion CRO treasury. The entity has already entered into a merger agreement with Yorkville’s SPAC firm YA II PN, Ltd., setting the stage for a potential public listing that would further cement TMTG’s role as a crypto-active company.
CEO Devin Nunes framed the initiative as both financial innovation and strategic diversification.“We believe CRO has tremendous potential for widespread adoption as a universal utility token and a secure, fast payment solution. We’re excited to add this innovative asset to our balance sheet,”Nunes said in a company statement.
The announcement had an immediate market impact. CRO prices surged more than 3% on Binance, reflecting investor optimism that Trump Media’s endorsement could increase token adoption. With CRO now joining Bitcoin and other digital assets in the company’s portfolio, TMTG is building a crypto-heavy balance sheet that underscores its ambitions well beyond social media.
For investors, the move raises intriguing questions. While some view the acquisition as a savvy play that could attract a loyal user base into Truth Social’s ecosystem, others see risks in tethering the company’s financial future so tightly to volatile crypto markets. Still, the merger pathway and treasury structure suggest that TMTG is planning for long-term integration of CRO into its operations rather than a speculative gamble.
The strategy also fits into a broader narrative of political branding meeting financial innovation. Trump Media has previously sought regulatory approval to launch a crypto-backed ETF, and its increasing alignment with the digital asset economy could bolster its appeal among pro-crypto communities. Whether CRO becomes a cornerstone of Truth Social’s growth or a risky overreach will depend on adoption rates and regulatory clarity in the months ahead.
