In a dramatic rise, the USD1 stablecoin—issued by Miami-based World Liberty Financial (WLFI) and politically affiliated with former U.S. President Donald Trump—has surpassed $2.1 billion in market capitalization and secured a listing on Binance. Trading for the USD1/USDT pair began today, May 22, positioning USD1 as the seventh-largest stablecoin by market cap, just under three months since its March 2025 debut.

Binance’s announcement confirms that spot trading for USD1 is now active, with withdrawal functionality opening at 12:00 UTC on May 23. Backed 1:1 by U.S. dollar reserves, including cash, short-term Treasury securities, and bank deposits, USD1 is issued and managed by BitGo Trust Company, a U.S.-regulated financial custodian.

To bolster adoption, WLFI plans an airdrop for WLFI token holders, with 6.8 billion votes approving the proposal earlier this month. Details on eligibility and distribution are expected soon, potentially expanding USD1's user base further.

Yet this rapid ascent comes amid controversy. WLFI has direct political ties to Trump, who serves as “Chief Crypto Advocate,” while his sons act as “Web3 Ambassadors.” These affiliations have drawn concern from Democratic lawmakers who fear political influence in financial innovation, particularly as the U.S. Senate debates the GENIUS Act—a bill aimed at creating a federal regulatory framework for stablecoins.

The GENIUS Act would mandate comprehensive reserve audits, enforce transparency standards, and formalize compliance obligations for issuers like WLFI. USD1’s swift rise, coupled with its Trump branding, could serve as a litmus test for the legislation’s urgency and efficacy.

This intersection of politics and blockchain is a notable evolution in crypto’s mainstream adoption. With USD1’s success and high-profile listing, regulators now face increasing pressure to reconcile innovation with oversight, especially as political figures directly engage in digital finance ventures.
