The Trump family’s deepening pivot into crypto has ignited debate as their flagship digital asset, WLFI, prepares for its September 1 trading debut. At the center of the controversy is a $750 million deal involving payments firm Alt5 Sigma and World Liberty Financial (WLF), a transaction that could deliver an estimated $500 million windfall to Trump-linked entities.

According to theWall Street Journal, Alt5 Sigma raised $750 million from external investors and used those funds to purchase WLFI tokens directly from WLF. Because a Trump-affiliated entity controls up to 75% of token-sale revenues, the structure effectively places the family on both sides of the transaction. While such circular financing is not unheard of in crypto, it remains rare—and controversial—in traditional financial markets.

“This structure brings the worst practices of the crypto ecosystem into regulated public markets,” warned Corey Frayer, a former senior SEC official. Legal experts, however, suggest that provided disclosures are thorough, the arrangement may remain compliant with U.S. securities law.

The controversy underscores how swiftly crypto has eclipsed real estate as the Trump family’s primary business focus. Alt5 Sigma itself recently raised $1.5 billion via stock offerings to fund a treasury strategy concentrated on WLFI tokens, even as the firm faces an SEC investigation into potential fraud and earnings manipulation.

WLFI’s market debut is scheduled for September 1, coinciding with Labor Day while U.S. markets remain closed. Early chatter pegs the token’s initial price near $0.30, which could place it among the top 45 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Exchanges including Kraken, OKX, Gate.io, MEXC, KuCoin, and Justin Sun’s HTX are already preparing to list the asset, fueling speculation about its early trajectory.

On paper, the Trump family’s WLFI holdings exceed $6 billion, with former President Donald Trump personally controlling about two-thirds. Additional crypto assets tied to the family include the TRUMP meme coin and stakes in Trump Media, further entrenching their financial future in digital assets.

Still, questions loom over whether the family will be able to realize those gains. WLFI insiders face restrictions on how many tokens they can sell at launch, a dynamic that has already caused volatility in Trump-themed tokens earlier this year. With limited liquidity, even modest insider sales could trigger steep price swings.

“It’s a good, explosive cocktail,” remarked Morten Christensen, founder of AirdropAlert, noting that low-float assets are more susceptible to both price pumps and rapid collapses.

The WLFI launch represents a historic moment: never before has a former U.S. president’s family been so heavily invested in, and directly tied to, the debut of a controversial digital asset. Whether WLFI becomes a top-tier token or unravels under scrutiny, its debut marks a defining test of crypto’s uneasy convergence with politics, wealth, and public markets.
