The Plasma network’s mainnet beta launch has already created a spectacle in the crypto markets, as a meme coin inspired by the project’s own cultural branding briefly soared to a $60 million market cap. The token, called Trillions, emerged almost simultaneously with Plasma’s debut and quickly captured traders’ attention before experiencing a sharp retracement.

Plasma itself had a strong launch, securing $5.5 billion in total value locked and pushing its native token, XPL, to a $2.3 billion valuation. The Trillions token played off a meme central to Plasma’s identity, which dates back to late 2024. That December, White House AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks remarked that stablecoins could generate “trillions of dollars of demand” for U.S. Treasuries, given that stablecoin issuers often hold treasuries in their reserves. Plasma reposted the clip with a single word — “trillions” — and the reference quickly evolved into a rallying cry for the network’s community.

By February 2025, “trillions” had become a signature sign-off for Plasma employees on social media, turning into a symbolic marker of the project’s ambitions. When the network’s mainnet beta launched last week, users celebrating their XPL airdrops revived the meme, leading to the creation of the Trillions token on the same day.

Initially trading below a $10 million market cap, Trillions skyrocketed to $60 million by Sunday before plunging to $18 million, according to DEX Screener. The extreme volatility illustrates both the speculative nature of meme coins and the intensity of community-driven narratives that often fuel them. Despite its spectacular price action, Plasma declined to comment on the token, reiterating that it does not officially endorse meme coins launched on its chain.

The frenzy around Trillions was not isolated. Other meme tokens, including Bankless, a dog-themed coin called Luna, and a Pepe clone, also reached multi-million dollar valuations. Most of these were created on DyorSwap, a multi-chain launchpad that quickly became a hotspot for speculative launches on Plasma. The activity demonstrates how permissionless networks often see an influx of traders experimenting with meme assets alongside more serious applications.

Plasma’s core focus, however, remains stablecoins. Designed as a layer-1 optimized for stablecoin transactions, the network supports features such as gasless USDT transfers and aims to position itself as a leading hub for stablecoin liquidity. Less than a week after its launch, Plasma ranked as the fifth-largest stablecoin network, surpassing Hyperliquid, Aptos, and Base, according to DefiLlama.

The total stablecoin market currently sits at $297 billion. For Plasma, the ambition is to capture a share of a sector that could eventually scale into the trillions of dollars — a vision that aligns perfectly with the meme that inspired its most notable community-driven token to date. While the Trillions coin may remain speculative, it reflects the blending of memetics, market speculation, and serious infrastructure growth that defines much of crypto’s current landscape.
