The Collector Who Pulled a Bitcoin From a $13 Card Pack
An Arizona collector hit a 1 BTC redemption card from a $13 GameStop pack, turning trading cards into six-figure crypto gains.
A GameStop shopper in Arizona recently transformed a $13 purchase into a six-figure windfall, pulling a 1 Bitcoin redemption card valued at nearly $115,000 from a pack of Cardsmiths’Currency Seriestrading cards.
GameStop itself does not sell Bitcoin directly—though the company does hold BTC on its balance sheet—but this unlikely jackpot was made possible by Cardsmiths, a trading card manufacturer that has gained traction with its cryptocurrency-themed collectibles. Each pack carries a slim chance of containing a redemption code for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or Dogecoin. The top prize: a full Bitcoin.
“I didn’t think it was a serious possibility,” the anonymous collector told Cardsmiths after claiming the winning card.
With packs starting at just $13.25, the odds of finding a crypto redemption card are 1 in 192. That makes the Arizona collector’s prize equivalent to an 865,000% return on investment—a gain that rivals the most dramatic stories in Bitcoin’s volatile trading history.
This marks at least the third confirmed full-Bitcoin redemption in the past year. Earlier lucky collectors found 1 BTC cards in packs priced at $33 and $50. While the monetary windfall is obvious, the most recent winner has chosen not to keep the entire Bitcoin. In a post on Reddit, the user—going by the handledecoparts—explained they had previously pledged to donate half of any crypto winnings to charity.
“Boy, was I in for a lesson on backing up my promises and putting my money where my mouth is,” they wrote. True to their word, the collector is keeping 0.5 BTC and directing the rest to charitable causes.
Although the Series 4 Currency packs that yielded the prize are sold out, Cardsmiths’ latestSPACE Seriescontinues to offer unredeemed full Bitcoin cards, with packs listed for as little as $13.75 on the company’s website.
The promotion highlights the growing intersection of crypto adoption and pop culture collectibles. While most buyers are in it for the novelty of themed cards, the possibility of landing a life-changing crypto prize adds speculative allure—turning trading cards into something resembling a lottery ticket.
With Bitcoin trading above $115,000, the Arizona collector’s improbable win reinforces both the speculative nature of crypto markets and the cultural pull of Bitcoin as a prize. For GameStop, which has flirted with blockchain ventures in the past, the story is another reminder of how deeply intertwined the retailer’s brand remains with both gaming and digital innovation.
