Sui Token Rebounds After $223M Exploit on Cetus DEX Shakes Ecosystem
SUI recovers slightly after a $223M exploit on Cetus, its largest DEX. Other Sui ecosystem tokens still plunge.
The native token of the Sui blockchain, SUI, is beginning to recover after a massive $223 million exploit targeted Cetus, the network's largest decentralized exchange. News of the breach caused SUI to plummet from $4.18 to $3.82 on Thursday, but the token was recently trading at $3.89, showing signs of a modest rebound.
According to a social media update from the Sui team, malicious actors siphoned funds from Cetus’ liquidity pools, leaving the hacker-controlled wallet with around $37 million in various cryptocurrencies, as tracked by SuiVision. In response, Cetus has paused all smart contracts to prevent further loss and is preparing an official incident report. “The Cetus team is exploring paths to recover those funds and return them to the community,” the Sui post noted.
Despite SUI’s partial recovery, other tokens in the Sui ecosystem continue to suffer. Lofi (LOFI), Sudeng (HIPPO), and Squirtle (SQUIRT) experienced significant declines of 15%, 6%, and 91% respectively, based on CoinMarketCap data.
This exploit highlights a broader issue plaguing decentralized finance. A recent Chainalysis report revealed that DeFi hacks resulted in $2.2 billion in stolen funds in 2024, marking a 21% increase from the previous year. Centralized platforms have not been immune either—February saw ByBit suffer a record-breaking $1.4 billion breach.
As the Sui team works to restore trust and Cetus prepares a full report, the broader ecosystem faces growing pressure to enhance smart contract security and user protection. The incident reinforces ongoing concerns about the vulnerability of decentralized financial infrastructures in an increasingly hostile digital landscape.
