Stripe and Paradigm Launch Tempo, a Blockchain Built for Stablecoin Payments
Stripe and Paradigm launch Tempo, a payments-focused blockchain built to optimize stablecoin transactions and enterprise adoption.
Stripe and Paradigm have officially unveiledTempo, a new layer 1 blockchain designed to streamline stablecoin transactions and expand the use of digital currencies in everyday payments. The announcement confirms months of speculation about the two firms’ quiet collaboration on a payments-focused infrastructure project.
Currently running on a private testnet, Tempo seeks to address what its founders describe as a fundamental gap in today’s crypto ecosystem. While much of the industry’s infrastructure is optimized for trading and speculation, stablecoin payments — now one of the fastest-growing applications of blockchain — remain underserved.
“As stablecoins go mainstream, there’s a growing need for optimized infrastructure,” said Matt Huang, co-founder and managing partner at Paradigm, who will also lead Tempo. “Much of today’s crypto stack either explicitly or implicitly caters to trading but is comparatively underoptimized for payments.”
Tempo’s architecture prioritizes speed, low fees, and scalability. The network introduces apayment-first design, including stablecoin gas fees enabled by an embedded automated market maker, a dedicated payments lane with optional privacy features, and performance benchmarks targeting over 100,000 transactions per second with near-instant settlement.
The platform isbuilt on Reth and fully EVM-compatible, allowing developers to integrate familiar Ethereum tooling while benefiting from Tempo’s specialized infrastructure. Its design reflects a broader ambition: to create a blockchain that feels more like a mainstream payments system than a trading venue.
Tempo’s scope extends across a wide range of use cases, fromglobal payroll and remittancestotokenized depositsfor 24/7 settlement, embedded financial accounts, microtransactions, and emerging forms ofagentic payments. For enterprises, the integration of privacy and compliance-ready rails is expected to ease concerns around sensitive financial data.
The project has already drawn support from an impressive roster of early design partners, includingAnthropic, OpenAI, Deutsche Bank, Visa, Shopify, and Standard Chartered. Their involvement underscores Tempo’s positioning at the intersection of fintech, AI, and global commerce.
Huang emphasized that Tempo will operate independently, with its own dedicated team, while maintaining strategic ties to both Stripe and Paradigm. “We believe Tempo will complement existing crypto infrastructure and be a conduit for many large enterprises to come on-chain, increasing adoption of crypto tools and infrastructure,” he said.
Stripe’s entry into blockchain infrastructure marks a significant shift for a company that has long dominated online payments in traditional finance. Its collaboration with Paradigm reflects a growing recognition that stablecoins, now used for billions in daily settlement, represent one of the most practical bridges between traditional and decentralized finance.
Tempo will not face this frontier alone. Circle, fresh off its blockbuster IPO, recently unveiledArc, a competing layer 1 network dedicated to stablecoin finance, slated for launch this fall. The competition signals that the battle to build the backbone of stablecoin payments — fast, compliant, and scalable — is just beginning.
