Steak ‘n Shake's Bitcoin Revolution: Lightning Network Boosts Speed, Cuts Fees
Steak ‘n Shake reveals global Bitcoin payment success, citing major adoption, faster transactions, and big savings on processing fees.
At the Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, Steak ‘n Shake executive Dan Edwards announced the fast-food chain’s breakthrough success in integrating Bitcoin payments worldwide via the Lightning Network. Launched on May 16, this move has already yielded impressive adoption metrics and substantial cost savings.
“This is a global implementation,” Edwards stated, clarifying that the rollout includes all locations where local laws permit Bitcoin payments. In just days, the volume surged beyond initial projections. “The day we launched Bitcoin, 1 out of every 500 bitcoin transactions in the world happened at Steak ‘n Shake,” Edwards reported.
Beyond novelty, the integration of Bitcoin has offered real financial benefits. “Bitcoin is faster than credit cards,” Edwards emphasized, “and when customers choose to pay in Bitcoin, we’re saving 50% in processing fees. That makes Bitcoin a win for the customer, a win for us, and a win for the Bitcoin community.”
Edwards dismissed the idea that this was a mere marketing ploy. “We didn’t see this as a marketing gimmick. We saw it as a viable option to pay—on par with other globally accepted methods,” he noted. This pragmatic approach appears to be reshaping customer behavior, with Edwards confirming a “sustained spike” in traffic and transactions since the rollout.
Looking ahead, the company is positioning itself at the frontier of technological innovation in the food industry. “We’re not done,” said Edwards. “We’re investing in cyber chefs, autonomous drives, AI tech—and we need engineers to help us build it.”
Steak ‘n Shake’s early success with Bitcoin illustrates how traditional businesses can harness blockchain for tangible improvements. It also sets a precedent for wider adoption in retail and hospitality, marking a pivotal shift from experimentation to operational integration.
