Standard Chartered Signals Institutional Crypto Maturity with Regulated Trading Launch
Standard Chartered debuts regulated Bitcoin and Ether trading for institutions, signaling a shift in global crypto adoption.
Standard Chartered has made a decisive move into the digital asset space by launching a regulated trading service for Bitcoin and Ether tailored to institutional clients. This initiative positions the British multinational as the first systemically important global bank to offer spot crypto trading within a regulatory framework, marking a significant moment in the maturation of institutional crypto finance.
Rolled out through its UK operations, the service allows trading of Bitcoin (XBT/USD) and Ether (XET/USD) and is expected to soon include non-deliverable forwards (NDFs). Notably, the trading functionality is integrated into Standard Chartered’s existing FX platforms, streamlining access for corporate clients, asset managers, and institutional investors.
Clients will also have the flexibility to settle trades through a custodian of their choice, including Zodia Custody, Standard Chartered’s in-house digital asset custody platform. The bank’s role as a Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)-registered cryptoasset provider ensures regulatory compliance, while its robust trading infrastructure and risk management protocols offer the level of security and stability institutions demand.
"Digital assets are foundational to the future of financial services," said Group CEO Bill Winters. "As demand increases, we’re offering clients a secure and regulated route to engage with this emerging asset class."
Tony Hall, Global Head of Trading and XVA, emphasized the importance of the bank's global infrastructure and compliance expertise in shaping a scalable institutional offering.
This move is part of a broader crypto strategy that includes the development of digital custody services, investments in platforms such as Zodia Markets, and the launch of Libeara, a tokenization initiative. By embedding digital asset services within its corporate and investment banking unit, Standard Chartered is dismantling key barriers to institutional adoption.
Adding further credibility to its efforts, the bank recently formed a strategic alliance with FalconX, a major institutional digital asset broker. The partnership will integrate Standard Chartered’s traditional banking services with FalconX’s crypto infrastructure, reinforcing the bank’s global commitment to enabling a digital asset economy.
As the institutional appetite for digital assets grows, Standard Chartered’s pioneering efforts suggest that regulated, bank-grade crypto services are no longer a future prospect—they are now a reality.
