Sovereign Wealth Funds Expand Crypto Exposure as Norway's Holdings Nearly Triple
Sovereign wealth funds ramp up crypto exposure, with Norway's Bitcoin-linked investments soaring nearly 193% in a year.
Global sovereign wealth funds are intensifying their engagement with cryptocurrency markets, with Norway's Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) recording one of the most striking increases. The fund's Bitcoin-related investments surged 192.7% over the past year, reaching an estimated $862.8 million, according to K33 Research.
This exposure, amounting to roughly 7,161 BTC, has been accumulated indirectly through equity stakes in Bitcoin-focused companies such as MicroStrategy, Japanese-listed Metaplanet, and U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase. The most significant growth came from its position in MicroStrategy, which rose to over 11.9 billion Norwegian krone ($1.2 billion), marking a 133% increase since early 2024. Its Coinbase holdings also expanded sharply, gaining more than 96% during the same period.
Norwegian law prohibits sovereign and pension funds from purchasing Bitcoin directly. Instead, the GPFG leverages alternative instruments such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs), corporate bonds, and equities in cryptocurrency-related firms to gain exposure while complying with domestic regulations.
Norway is not alone in adopting this approach. The State of Wisconsin Investment Board initially allocated $164 million to Bitcoin ETFs before doubling its stake to $321 million and later diversifying into MicroStrategy shares. Similarly, Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund has expressed interest in reallocating part of its reserves away from gold and foreign currency toward digital assets.
This trend signals a broader institutional acceptance of cryptocurrencies as part of national investment strategies. Sovereign wealth fund participation injects significant liquidity into the market and can help stabilize investor sentiment during volatility. the increasing overlap between traditional finance and digital asset markets reflects a fundamental shift in how nations are diversifying and managing long-term wealth.
With Bitcoin currently trading around $118,874, down 1.89% in the past 24 hours, the timing of these moves underscores a calculated confidence in the asset's long-term value. As more state-backed funds embrace indirect crypto exposure, the integration of digital assets into sovereign portfolios may become a defining feature of global investment policy.
