Sora Ventures, a Taiwan-based crypto venture capital firm, has unveiled ambitious plans to raise $1 billion for what it describes as Asia’s first Bitcoin treasury fund. Announced at Taipei Blockchain Week, the initiative aims to consolidate institutional adoption of Bitcoin across the region and accelerate corporate integration of the cryptocurrency into balance sheets.

Jason Fang, founder and managing partner of Sora Ventures, said the fund seeks to replicate and scale the treasury strategies already popular in the U.S. and Europe. “We are bringing institutional capital together, from local to regional, and now to the global stage,” he explained, noting that Asia has so far lagged behind in coordinated adoption.

The firm has already secured $200 million in commitments from regional partners and investors, with plans to reach the $1 billion target within six months. Fang emphasized that while isolated efforts exist in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and South Korea, they remain fragmented. A centralized pool, he argued, will provide the necessary scale and coordination to shift Bitcoin from a speculative asset to a recognized reserve instrument.

Unlike country-specific initiatives, the Sora fund is designed to act as a regional institutional pool. By consolidating resources, it seeks to create synergies among Asian firms adopting Bitcoin while linking them with global treasury strategies. This mirrors the path taken by U.S. companies such as MicroStrategy, which has become the emblematic corporate Bitcoin holder.

The fund will focus not only on firms already holding Bitcoin but also on encouraging new entrants to add the cryptocurrency to their balance sheets. Sora Ventures argues that this approach can help normalize Bitcoin as a treasury asset across diverse markets.

The announcement follows a series of strategic investments by Sora Ventures. In April 2024, the firm backed Japan’s Metaplanet in a ¥1 billion ($6.6 million) Bitcoin purchase. Today, Metaplanet holds 20,000 BTC worth $2.2 billion, making it Asia’s largest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency.

In Hong Kong, Sora acquired Moon Inc. (formerly HK Asia Holdings), guiding its transition toward Bitcoin and Web3 investments. More recently, the firm led a consortium in acquiring Thailand’s DV8 to replicate the Metaplanet treasury model in Southeast Asia. It also secured a majority stake in South Korea’s BitPlanet to expand digital asset services.

According to BitcoinTreasuries.net, several other Asian corporations are already part of the movement. Cango Inc. currently holds Bitcoin valued at $569 million, while Bitfufu controls reserves worth over $200 million. These figures reflect a shift in corporate strategy, treating Bitcoin less as a speculative play and more as a long-term reserve asset.

By creating a $1 billion centralized fund, Sora Ventures hopes to catalyze broader adoption and position Asia as a serious player in the global Bitcoin treasury movement. If successful, the initiative could mark a turning point in how corporations across the continent perceive and deploy Bitcoin.
