SoftBank and Ark Investment Weigh Landmark Backing for Tether’s Global Expansion
SoftBank and Ark may back Tether in a $20B round, pushing its valuation to $500B and reshaping the stablecoin market.
Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, is drawing renewed attention from some of the biggest names in global finance. According to Bloomberg, Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment are reportedly exploring participation in a multibillion-dollar funding round that could redefine the company’s position in digital finance.
The discussions, still at an early stage, suggest that Tether could raise as much as $20 billion. If realized, such a deal would propel the firm’s valuation to an estimated $500 billion, placing it in the same league as tech powerhouses like SpaceX and OpenAI. That figure would make Tether one of the most valuable private companies worldwide—an extraordinary milestone for a business built on a digital asset still regarded with skepticism by some regulators.
Tether currently dominates the stablecoin market with over $173 billion in USDT tokens circulating globally. Its token, pegged to the U.S. dollar, remains a critical liquidity tool for cryptocurrency trading and cross-border transactions. Yet the company is seeking ways to expand its presence further, including plans to launch a U.S.-focused stablecoin.
While Tether’s Chief Strategy Officer Bo Hines stressed that the company has “no immediate plans to raise funds,” the involvement of SoftBank and Ark Investment underscores growing institutional appetite for stablecoins. The potential round is also being advised by Cantor Fitzgerald, already listed as a shareholder in Tether, providing additional weight and legitimacy to the talks.
Analysts say that if SoftBank and Ark decide to inject capital, the move would mark a turning point for the relationship between traditional finance and the crypto sector. Both investors have long track records of supporting disruptive technologies, and their interest in Tether highlights stablecoins’ increasing relevance in mainstream financial infrastructure.
Strategic partnerships of this magnitude could strengthen Tether’s resilience and global reach. SoftBank’s deep ties across Asia and Ark’s reputation in technology-driven investments may accelerate Tether’s ambitions, positioning it not only as a cornerstone of crypto markets but also as a potential player in international payments and financial inclusion.
At the same time, such a funding round would reflect broader market trends. As institutional capital continues to flow into crypto, the line between conventional finance and decentralized assets is blurring. Stablecoins, once considered niche instruments, are emerging as a central pillar in digital finance, bridging the gap between blockchain innovation and traditional banking systems.
Whether or not this $20 billion round materializes, the talks themselves are a reminder of the strategic role Tether plays in shaping the global financial landscape. For investors like SoftBank and Ark, the bet is not only on a single company but on the future of stablecoins as indispensable infrastructure for the digital economy.
