Singapore is preparing to deepen its role in institutional crypto markets with the launch of Bitcoin and Ethereum perpetual futures on its main derivatives exchange. The Singapore Exchange (SGX) announced that the products will go live on November 24, a move aimed at capturing rising demand from professional investors seeking regulated access to crypto-linked derivatives. The introduction marks another step in the country’s measured but strategic expansion into digital asset trading infrastructure.

The perpetual futures will allow accredited and expert investors to take leveraged positions on the spot prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum without dealing with contract expirations. This structure, a defining feature of perpetual derivatives, enables traders to maintain long-term exposure while paying or receiving funding rates that balance market positioning. Unlike traditional futures, where open interest resets at expiry, perpetuals sustain continuous speculation—an attribute that has made them dominant in crypto-native markets. SGX’s decision to adopt the model reflects growing interest from institutions accustomed to the liquidity and round-the-clock trading these instruments provide.

SGX’s derivatives unit framed the launch as a bridge between institutional finance and the operational patterns of digital asset markets. The offering will be regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, aligning it with the country's broader approach of permitting innovation within a tightly supervised environment. Singapore has long maintained that regulated access, rather than unrestrained speculation, is key to maintaining financial stability while integrating blockchain-driven products into mainstream finance.

This is not Singapore’s first introduction of perpetual futures. EDXM International launched similar products in July, including contracts tied to Solana and XRP. Under the country’s regulatory framework, multiple exchanges are permitted to issue comparable offerings, provided they operate under the Monetary Authority’s supervision. The arrival of a competing product on SGX, however, gives institutional investors a venue backed by one of Asia’s most established financial market operators.

The launch unfolds against a backdrop of gradually tightening regulation. The Financial Services and Markets Act, passed in 2022, expanded the regulator’s authority over crypto firms based in Singapore but serving overseas users, establishing clear jurisdictional limits and enforcement mechanisms. The Monetary Authority has since required local firms offering digital token services to foreign markets to obtain appropriate licensing or cease operations, with penalties ranging from steep fines to potential prison terms. These measures underscore Singapore’s intent to supervise cross-border digital asset activity with the same rigor applied to traditional financial sectors.

Despite its cautious stance, Singapore continues to offer one of the most sophisticated digital asset regulatory environments globally. Cryptocurrencies are legal and classified based on their economic function, allowing regulators to apply precise frameworks for payment tokens, securities, or utility assets. This clarity, paired with the city-state’s robust financial infrastructure, has made it an attractive hub for institutions exploring crypto-linked products.

The introduction of perpetual futures on SGX reflects Singapore’s strategy of enabling advanced crypto instruments for qualified market participants while maintaining high compliance standards. As global exchanges look for stable regulatory jurisdictions to pilot new digital products, Singapore’s blend of innovation and oversight positions it as a testing ground for the next phase of institutional crypto trading.
