Romania’s National Post Office Launches Bitcoin ATMs, Pioneering Public-Sector Crypto Access in Eastern Europe
Romania debuts Bitcoin ATMs via its national postal service, expanding crypto access across cities and rural regions.
Romania has taken a significant step toward democratizing access to digital assets by launching the country’s first Bitcoin ATM through its national postal service, Poșta Română. This pilot program, initiated in Tulcea and powered by Bitcoin Romania (Tradesilvania), marks the first time a public institution in the country has offered direct cryptocurrency services to the general public.
This move merges traditional infrastructure with digital innovation. The ATM allows users to buy and sell Bitcoin using cash, read QR wallet codes, and complete transactions within minutes. The interface, designed with accessibility in mind, includes full Romanian language support and ID verification for larger transactions, aligning with KYC/AML regulations.
The rollout to additional cities — including Alexandria, Piatra Neamț, Botoșani, and Nădlac — reflects a nationwide ambition to bridge the digital divide. The partnership provides strategic value: Poșta Română leverages its trusted national reach to modernize services, while Bitcoin Romania gains an avenue for rapid growth into underserved regions.
“This is about access, education, and building trust in digital finance,” stated Constantin Rotariu, co-founder of Bitcoin Romania. The initiative targets both tech-savvy youth and financially cautious demographics like retirees, offering secure, in-person alternatives to online exchanges.
Despite transaction fees between 4% and 7%, on par or slightly lower than European averages, many users prefer the ATM's immediacy and simplicity. Maria, a retiree, shared, “I’d rather pay a bit more and know my transaction is instant and secure,” after sending Bitcoin to her grandson in Germany.
Romania’s effort comes amid a regional surge in crypto engagement, with Eastern Europe seeing $499 billion in crypto inflows over the past year. Over 600,000 Romanians now hold cryptocurrency investments, and the country is actively aligning with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, which supports further institutional involvement.
The initiative is being closely watched as a model for other EU nations. By embedding Bitcoin access within a trusted public entity, Romania offers a scalable solution to boost digital financial inclusion. As social media buzzed with images and comments from the Tulcea pilot, one post captured the sentiment: “Romania’s post office just installed a Bitcoin ATM. This is how you bring crypto to the masses!”
