Robinhood Expands North with $179M Acquisition of Canada’s WonderFi
Robinhood acquires Canadian crypto platform WonderFi for $179M, accelerating its international crypto expansion.
Robinhood Markets Inc., the U.S.-based trading platform known for democratizing stock investing, is doubling down on its crypto ambitions with the $179 million acquisition of Canadian digital asset firm WonderFi Technologies Inc. The all-cash transaction, valued at CA$250 million, marks Robinhood’s latest strategic step toward cementing its presence in the global crypto market.
WonderFi is a rising force in Canada’s fintech ecosystem. Since its founding in 2021, the company has become a major player in regulated cryptocurrency trading through its ownership of BitBuy and Coinsquare—two of Canada’s largest platforms. Together, they hold over CA$2.1 billion in assets under custody. Robinhood’s offer, which values WonderFi shares at CA$0.36 each, represents a 41% premium over their last closing price and a 71% premium over the stock’s 30-day volume-weighted average.
Johann Kerbrat, general manager of Robinhood Crypto, emphasized the strategic importance of the deal. “WonderFi has built a formidable family of brands serving beginner and advanced crypto users alike, making them an ideal partner to accelerate Robinhood’s mission in Canada,” he stated.
This acquisition follows Robinhood’s broader push into crypto markets. After slowly introducing cryptocurrency trading to U.S. customers in 2018, the company has expanded its offerings to more than 30 crypto assets, including bitcoin and Ethereum. In 2024, it acquired global exchange Bitstamp for $200 million, gaining a network of over 50 regulatory licenses that paved the way for operations in the U.K., EU, and Asia.
The WonderFi acquisition reinforces Robinhood’s commitment to Canada, where it established a Toronto headquarters in 2024. Once the deal is finalized—expected in the second half of 2025 pending regulatory and shareholder approval—WonderFi will continue operating under its existing brand. Its leadership team will also remain in place as part of Robinhood Crypto.
For Robinhood, this acquisition is more than geographic expansion. It represents a bid to capture market share in one of the world’s most regulated and financially literate crypto environments, while extending its appeal to both novice and experienced investors. For WonderFi, the partnership provides access to a much larger platform and deep institutional backing as it scales its product suite.
In a rapidly consolidating crypto market, Robinhood’s Canadian bet could be a turning point in the race to build a globally compliant, retail-first crypto ecosystem.
