Robinhood Doubles Down on Tokenization as Crypto Revenue Nearly Doubles
Robinhood's crypto revenue nearly doubles as tokenization becomes central to its growth strategy via the new Robinhood Chain.
Robinhood’s crypto revenue nearly doubled in Q2 2025, surging 98% year-on-year to $160 million. The platform’s broader financial performance also impressed, with net revenue climbing 45% to $989 million and net income more than doubling to $386 million. But beyond the headline numbers, the company’s strategic pivot toward asset tokenization stole the spotlight.
CEO Vlad Tenev positioned tokenization as the most transformative innovation in capital markets in over a decade, mentioning it repeatedly during the earnings call. This bold stance comes as Robinhood expands its crypto ambitions through the launch of Robinhood Chain, a proprietary Ethereum-based Layer 2 blockchain network aimed at bringing traditionally illiquid assets onto the chain.
Robinhood Chain’s mission is to tokenize real-world assets such as private shares, venture capital funds, and real estate—effectively democratizing access to markets historically reserved for institutional investors. The initiative has already debuted in Europe, offering tokenized exposure to companies like OpenAI and SpaceX.
The firm’s crypto trading volumes reached $28 billion, marking a 32% increase over the previous quarter, in line with a broader market capitalization surge of 21.7% to $3.36 trillion. Although Robinhood shares dipped slightly in after-hours trading, the long-term narrative appears bullish, especially given the company’s recent $200 million acquisition of crypto exchange Bitstamp to support its tokenization infrastructure.
Tenev emphasized key benefits of tokenization: instant settlement, round-the-clock trading, and retail-friendly self-custody options. These features aim to position Robinhood as a gateway to the next era of digital finance, reinforcing its appeal among younger, tech-savvy investors.
Robinhood isn’t alone in betting on tokenization. The sector is witnessing a revival, with Gemini launching tokenized share offerings in Europe and Coinbase reportedly seeking SEC approval for a similar initiative. BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has also urged regulators to embrace tokenized securities, citing their potential to modernize the financial system.
With the SEC signaling tentative openness to new tokenization frameworks, Robinhood may be strategically ahead of the curve. The convergence of regulatory softening and renewed institutional interest suggests that tokenization could transition from fringe experiment to core market infrastructure.
Robinhood’s Q2 performance, underpinned by surging crypto engagement and a pioneering tokenization roadmap, marks a decisive turn in its evolution from a retail trading app to a forward-thinking financial platform.
