Ripple’s XRP Strategy Shifts Again as 500 Million Tokens Await Possible Release
Ripple unlocks 500M XRP amid shifting escrow strategy, with market impact hinging on liquidity priorities.
Ripple’s evolving management of its XRP escrow has taken another unexpected turn this July, reigniting speculation about potential market impacts. On-chain data confirms that 500 million XRP tokens remain poised for release later this month following a partial unlock and realignment of the company's asset strategy.
Earlier this week, Ripple unlocked one billion XRP from its automated escrow contracts. Of that, 400 million XRP were relocked shortly after, in a continuation of the company’s long-standing practice of returning unused funds. However, what stands out this month is the strategic handling of the remaining 600 million XRP.
According to blockchain data and XRP monitoring accounts, 300 million XRP have been allocated for on-demand liquidity (ODL) corridors, exchange-traded products (ETPs), and other institutional partnerships. These tokens are not being relocked, suggesting Ripple is shifting toward a more flexible, demand-driven release model.
This change marks a significant departure from Ripple’s historically predictable escrow cycle. Traditionally, the firm released one billion XRP monthly and relocked roughly 800 million shortly after. Since March, however, Ripple has begun creating new escrows from its existing holdings and reducing reliance on the initial time-locked structures.
The remaining 500 million XRP that may be released this month could bring July’s total activity in line with the broader 2025 forecast. Ripple has already locked 700 million XRP in July, maintaining its projected schedule, though now through more dynamic allocation techniques.
While the net circulating supply remains relatively stable, Ripple’s more fragmented release strategy has introduced new uncertainties. Investors and analysts are watching closely to assess how this evolving mechanism might influence short-term liquidity and long-term price stability.
Ripple’s total escrow balance currently stands at approximately 36.4 billion XRP, held in smart contracts that release funds on a pre-determined monthly basis. Ripple’s directly held XRP supply remains around five billion, a distinction the company continues to emphasize to underline operational transparency.
As the company positions its assets to support ETPs and ODL integrations, it appears increasingly focused on market infrastructure rather than modifying circulating supply outright. Whether the remaining 500 million XRP will be deployed or relocked remains to be seen—but the shift in strategy highlights Ripple’s growing emphasis on adaptability in a changing regulatory and financial environment.
