A formally approved change request now recognizes Ripple’s Interledger Protocol within the ISO 20022 framework, placing it firmly on the radar of SWIFT at the exact moment the global messaging system undergoes its most significant modernization in decades. The development, first flagged by analyst SMQKE, suggests that the long-anticipated convergence between blockchain networks and the world’s dominant banking infrastructure may be closer than previously assumed.
According to the documents referenced by SMQKE, the request was submitted by the Mojaloop Foundation, an organization focused on interoperable payments for emerging markets, and received formal approval in late 2024. The proposal cites Ripple’s Interledger Protocol explicitly, granting it recognition within the new ISO architecture that SWIFT and global financial institutions are transitioning toward. For observers tracking Ripple’s ambitions, the approval is more than a procedural footnote; it signals that ILP has been evaluated as a compatible standard for the next era of financial messaging.
What gives this timing particular weight is the scale of SWIFT’s ongoing migration. By early 2026, an estimated ninety percent of all SWIFT traffic is projected to be fully aligned with ISO 20022. That transformation is not merely cosmetic. It rebuilds the data layer behind international transfers, enabling richer messaging formats and smoother compatibility across platforms.
