Ripple-SEC Battle Ends with $125M Settlement as XRP Holds Post-Rally Gains
Ripple and SEC end years-long case with $125M fine and XRP sales restrictions; XRP holds gains near $3.34 after legal clarity.
One of the cryptocurrency industry’s most closely watched legal battles has officially come to an end. Ripple Labs and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have dropped all remaining appeals, finalizing a $125 million penalty and cementing an injunction on certain institutional XRP sales.
The resolution, filed with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, confirms that both parties will cover their own legal costs. This outcome solidifies U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres’ landmark 2023 ruling, which distinguished between XRP’s open-market transactions — deemed not to require registration — and sales to institutional investors, which did.
This definitive closure comes after years of litigation and a series of failed attempts to reach a post-trial compromise. In June, Ripple and the SEC jointly sought an “indicative ruling” from Judge Torres that could have reduced the fine by more than half and lifted the sales injunction. That motion was denied outright, setting the stage for a continued appeals process. Instead, the latest filings show both sides abandoning their appellate efforts, leaving the original judgment intact.
The penalty funds, held in escrow, will soon be transferred to the U.S. Treasury, marking the financial conclusion of the case. For Ripple, the end of this legal uncertainty removes a significant overhang on its operations and investor sentiment.
Market reaction to the settlement was immediate. XRP surged sharply after the news broke, briefly testing the $3.34 level before consolidating. Technical indicators suggest the bullish structure remains intact: the 9- and 21-period exponential moving averages (EMAs) are still in alignment, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at 71 — indicating slightly overbought conditions. The MACD remains positive, though a waning histogram points to slowing momentum.
Analysts note that as long as XRP maintains support above the $3.30 zone, there is potential for another upward leg in the short term. Profit-taking has tempered gains for now, but the legal clarity could set the stage for renewed institutional interest.
The Ripple-SEC case has been one of the defining legal sagas of the crypto era, shaping not only the fate of XRP but also broader regulatory discourse on digital assets in the United States. With the final gavel strike, Ripple now shifts its focus fully toward market expansion and leveraging its cleared legal status to pursue new partnerships.
