Ripple Accelerates Stablecoin Expansion with $200M Acquisition of Rail
Ripple acquires stablecoin platform Rail for $200M amid U.S. regulatory clarity, expanding RLUSD’s infrastructure and global reach.
In a strategic move to cement its position in the evolving stablecoin landscape, Ripple has announced the $200 million acquisition of Toronto-based payments platform Rail. The deal, which follows a wave of regulatory clarity in the United States, is set to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
The acquisition marks a significant step in Ripple’s broader multi-billion dollar expansion strategy, aimed at bolstering its RLUSD stablecoin and related financial infrastructure. According to Ripple President Monica Long, the timing is opportune: “Stablecoins are quickly becoming a cornerstone of modern finance, and with Rail, we are uniquely positioned to drive the next phase of innovation and adoption.”
Rail brings key technological assets to Ripple’s stablecoin offering, including virtual accounts, automated back-office processes, and compliance tools—capabilities essential for scalable, enterprise-grade payments infrastructure. Currently, Rail is responsible for processing approximately 10% of global stablecoin transactions, underlining its influence in the cross-border payments ecosystem.
This acquisition directly strengthens RLUSD’s utility by integrating faster, cheaper, and more secure payment routes. Ripple claims that with Rail’s backend systems and its own stablecoin infrastructure, it is poised to deliver “the most comprehensive stablecoin payments solution available in the market.”
Crucially, the deal comes on the heels of a major policy shift in the U.S. President Donald Trump recently signed federal legislation that outlines a clear regulatory framework for stablecoins—a development widely seen as legitimizing the sector and opening the door for broader institutional adoption.
Ripple’s acquisition spree doesn’t end here. Earlier in 2025, the company acquired prime brokerage Hidden Road for $1.25 billion to improve liquidity for RLUSD and expand its institutional offering. It has also applied for a national banking charter and a Federal Reserve master account through a subsidiary, signaling its ambition to operate as a full-fledged financial entity within the U.S. regulatory perimeter.
Despite RLUSD still trailing market giants like Tether and USDC in terms of capitalization—with a current market cap just above $612 million—it has received an ‘A’ rating from CoinEdition, validating Ripple’s aggressive infrastructure and compliance-first strategy.
As global regulatory frameworks for digital assets take shape, Ripple’s acquisition of Rail positions it at the forefront of stablecoin-enabled financial innovation.
