Quantum Biopharma Boosts Crypto Treasury Amid Rising Trend in Biotech Sector
Quantum Biopharma adds $1M in Bitcoin and crypto to its treasury, now totaling $4.5M, following a rising trend in the biotech industry.
Canadian biotech company Quantum Biopharma has strengthened its digital asset holdings by acquiring an additional $1 million in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, bringing its total crypto treasury to approximately $4.5 million. The move was disclosed in a May 19 press release, with the company citing revenue generation through staking and a hedge against the Canadian dollar as key motives.
Following the announcement, Quantum’s shares (QNTM) surged by roughly 25%, according to data from Google Finance. The company emphasized that maintaining a crypto treasury can offer a return on investment to shareholders and protect against currency volatility.
Quantum's strategy mirrors a growing trend among biotech and healthcare firms that are turning to digital assets as part of their financial management. In March 2025, NASDAQ-listed Atai Life Sciences revealed plans to purchase $5 million in Bitcoin. Atai’s founder, Christian Angermayer, advocated strongly for Bitcoin in corporate treasuries, especially in the biotech sector, citing it as a hedge against inflation and a means to remain solvent through long regulatory cycles.
Similarly, Singapore-based Basel Medical Group announced on May 16 its intent to acquire $1 billion in Bitcoin to strengthen its balance sheet and support expansion plans across Asia. Unlike Quantum, however, Basel’s announcement triggered a 15% drop in its stock price.
As of May 19, corporate treasuries collectively hold over $83 billion in Bitcoin, according to BitcoinTreasuries.NET, with publicly traded companies becoming the second-largest institutional holders after exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Financial institutions and asset managers are also recognizing the value of Bitcoin in mitigating macroeconomic risks. Fidelity Digital Assets, in a 2024 report, described Bitcoin as a potential hedge against fiscal deficits, currency debasement, and geopolitical instability.
Quantum’s initiative signals a broader shift in financial strategy within traditionally conservative sectors like biotech, suggesting that digital assets are becoming an increasingly mainstream element of corporate finance.
