Polygon Executes Hard Fork to Restore Transaction Finality After Network Delays

Polygon, one of the leading Ethereum scaling solutions, has successfully implemented a hard fork to resolve a finality issue that caused significant transaction delays earlier this week. The Polygon Foundation confirmed that the update, which targeted bugs in both the Bor and Heimdall components of the network, restored normal functionality and reestablished confidence in the Layer 2 platform.

On Wednesday, Polygon’s proof-of-stake (PoS) chain experienced disruptions in its “local fast finality” system. These checkpoints, referred to internally as “milestones,” are designed to provide near-instant certainty on the state of the blockchain. However, a software bug introduced unexpected lags of 10 to 15 minutes in milestone confirmation, creating transaction bottlenecks and validator synchronization issues.

While transaction processing and block production continued uninterrupted, the absence of timely finality left users exposed to potential risks of reorganization or rollback. “Checkpoints are going through and consensus finalization has been fully restored on Polygon PoS,” the team announced on X, adding that all transactions and state syncs were once again “processing normally.”

The fix was delivered through a hard fork initiated at 3 p.m. UTC, which rolled out v2.2.11-beta2 for Bor—the block production layer—and v0.3.1 for Heimdall, which manages validator coordination and consensus. Polygon Labs assured users that it would continue to monitor the system closely to ensure stability.

Finality plays a critical role in blockchain ecosystems, marking the point at which a transaction is considered irreversible. Although blocks on Polygon continue to arrive every few seconds, they are only fully secure once validators finalize them. The temporary disruption highlighted the delicate balance between speed, security, and stability in Layer 2 networks.

This is not the first time Polygon has faced challenges around finality. Earlier this year, the project deployed an upgraded version of Heimdall v2, described as its “most technically complex” hard fork since 2020. That update aimed to modernize code inherited from 2018–2019 and improve validator efficiency. However, weeks after its rollout, Polygon experienced a separate one-hour disruption in transaction finality, underscoring the complexities of maintaining large-scale blockchain infrastructure.

Market reaction to Wednesday’s glitch was muted but noticeable. Polygon’s native token, POL, briefly dipped by as much as 4% before recovering. Investors and developers alike appeared reassured once the hard fork was completed and finality restored.

For Polygon, which has positioned itself as a critical scaling layer for Ethereum, maintaining stability is paramount. The network supports a broad range of decentralized applications, from gaming to DeFi protocols, and downtime or delays can quickly erode trust. Wednesday’s rapid response suggests the team remains proactive in safeguarding the ecosystem.

As the Layer 2 race intensifies—with competitors such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync also vying for dominance—Polygon’s ability to swiftly address technical issues will be central to its long-term success. For now, the hard fork has stabilized operations, but the episode is a reminder of the fragility of blockchain networks still in rapid development.
