Paxos’ Strategic Bet: How the Fordefi Acquisition Reinforces Its Push for Institutional-Grade Digital Asset Infrastructure
Paxos buys Fordefi to strengthen its institutional wallet and stablecoin infrastructure with advanced MPC security.
Paxos’ acquisition of Fordefi marks another decisive step in the company’s bid to dominate institutional digital asset infrastructure. The transaction, reportedly valued at more than $100 million, underscores a growing effort among established fintech players to consolidate critical wallet and custody technologies as digital assets continue edging closer to mainstream finance. The deal not only surpasses Fordefi’s estimated $83 million valuation after its latest funding round but also illustrates Paxos’ belief that secure, scalable wallet solutions will anchor the next phase of enterprise adoption.
Paxos, headquartered in New York and backed by more than $500 million in funding, has positioned itself as a core utility provider in the stablecoin and digital asset management markets. Its prominence rose sharply in 2023 when it partnered with PayPal to launch the PYUSD token, an initiative that placed stablecoins in front of millions of U.S. consumers. Beyond that project, Paxos also issues its own dollar- and gold-backed stablecoins while offering a growing suite of services that help financial institutions integrate digital assets into their products.
The acquisition of Fordefi specifically targets a critical part of that strategy. Fordefi’s technology centers on multiparty computation, or MPC, a cybersecurity method that protects crypto wallets by splitting transaction approval across multiple encrypted keys stored on separate devices. This architecture lowers the risk of theft and strengthens safeguards for high-value transactions, a priority for institutional investors that cannot tolerate security lapses.
Fordefi’s platform also includes a transaction simulation tool that allows users to preview the outcome of a crypto transaction before executing it. This feature has gained traction among fund managers who use it to stress-test large trades and avoid operational risks. Paxos intends to integrate these capabilities into its existing institutional offering, strengthening the custody and wallet infrastructure it provides to banks, fintechs, and asset managers.
In the short term, Fordefi will continue operating its platform independently while Paxos works through a phased integration. Fordefi co-founder and CEO Josh Schwartz framed the acquisition as an opportunity to expand the reach of his company’s technology while preserving its emphasis on security and usability. He described the combined effort as delivering “the unified custody and stablecoin infrastructure” needed for institutions to scale real-world digital asset applications.
The deal follows Paxos’ acquisition of Membrane Finance in early 2025, which allowed one of its stablecoins to become available within the European Union. Together, the two acquisitions signal a broader expansion strategy: Paxos is accumulating the regulatory approvals, technology layers, and regional coverage required to meet growing global demand for trustworthy digital asset platforms.
As institutions deepen their involvement in tokenization and digital currencies, secure, compliant wallet systems are becoming central to operational workflows. Paxos’ move to acquire Fordefi reflects that shift. By reinforcing its custody and wallet infrastructure, the company is effectively constructing the rails on which future digital financial services may run—an investment that positions it to shape how enterprises interact with blockchain technology in the years ahead.
