Paris Saint-Germain Makes History with Bitcoin Treasury Allocation Ahead of UCL Final
PSG becomes the first major sports club to add Bitcoin to its treasury, deepening its bet on digital assets.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), one of Europe’s top football clubs, has become the first major sports organization to include Bitcoin (BTC) in its treasury reserves. The announcement was made by Pär Helgosson, Head of PSG Labs and Web3, during the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, and marks a bold strategic pivot for the Ligue 1 champions.
“PSG put Bitcoin in our books,” stated Helgosson. “We took our fiat reserves and actually allocated Bitcoin… We still have it.” With this move, PSG signals its intention not only to participate in the crypto space but to lead innovation in sports finance.
This shift in treasury management comes days before PSG faces Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final, giving the announcement heightened visibility. The decision to hold BTC goes beyond prior crypto initiatives such as fan tokens. Helgosson emphasized the alignment with the club’s global fanbase—estimated at 550 million, with nearly 80% under age 34—stating: “We’re about what’s next, just like Bitcoin.”
PSG’s commitment also includes fostering crypto-native ventures. “We will help you launch, list, and raise,” Helgosson added, revealing the club’s plan to act as both investor and launchpad for blockchain-based projects. It is a notable shift, transforming a sports entity into an active stakeholder in the decentralized economy.
PSG joins a growing wave of institutions adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets. On May 28, GameStop revealed it had purchased 4,710 BTC—over $500 million worth—becoming one of the largest corporate holders. Similarly, MicroStrategy, led by Michael Saylor, recently added 4,020 BTC, pushing its total holdings to 580,250 BTC.
Japanese firm Metaplanet and energy tech company KULR have also established Bitcoin Treasury Operations as core business strategies. This convergence of corporate and now sports capital into BTC illustrates a maturing narrative around Bitcoin as a legitimate store of value.
Still, Bitcoin’s market performance has shown volatility. As of this writing, BTC trades at approximately $106,134—down 1.4% over 24 hours and 4.54% over the past week. It remains more than 5% below its recent all-time high of $111,814. PSG’s move suggests confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term resilience and value proposition.
Industry observers see PSG’s adoption as a watershed moment, not only for sports finance but for crypto's broader institutional legitimacy. It sets a precedent that other elite clubs may follow as they explore financial diversification and digital engagement.
