The market for artificial intelligence-linked cryptocurrencies saw a sharp rally this week after JPMorgan Asset Management committed $500 million to Numerai, a hedge fund that uses AI to crowdsource trading strategies. The announcement sent the price of Numeraire (NMR), the fund’s native token, soaring by more than 100% in just 24 hours.

According to CoinGecko, NMR traded near $23 following the news, while the broader sector of AI-related tokens advanced 5.8% to reach a market capitalization of $29.4 billion. The gains came despite disappointing second-quarter results from Nvidia, the chipmaker whose hardware powers much of the current AI boom.

Other AI tokens also benefited from the surge. Near Protocol (NEAR) rose 1.5%, the token of the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (FET) gained 1.3%, and Internet Computer (ICP) climbed 1%. The rally underscores investor enthusiasm for blockchain projects that intersect with artificial intelligence, a space increasingly viewed as a frontier for both technology and finance.

Numerai, founded in 2015, operates as an encrypted platform where data scientists around the world compete to build predictive trading models. Participants are rewarded with NMR tokens when their models outperform, creating a global competition that aggregates forecasts into a single hedge fund strategy. The project has already attracted prominent backers, including hedge fund titan Paul Tudor Jones, early angel investor Naval Ravikant, and Howard Morgan, co-founder of Renaissance Technologies.

The structure of JPMorgan’s commitment is important to note. In hedge fund parlance, “capacity” represents a reserved allocation rather than an immediate capital transfer. By securing $500 million in capacity, JPMorgan has ensured access to the fund even if Numerai later limits new investment inflows. The move nevertheless signals strong institutional confidence in AI-driven financial strategies.

It also marks another shift for JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, long one of Wall Street’s most vocal crypto skeptics. Dimon once dismissed Bitcoin as a “fraud” and compared cryptocurrencies to Ponzi schemes. Yet in recent years, the bank has cautiously embraced digital assets, offering clients access to Bitcoin and experimenting with crypto-backed lending. The Numerai deal suggests a growing recognition within JPMorgan of the strategic potential of blockchain-based finance, particularly when paired with artificial intelligence.

As institutional players deepen their involvement in tokenized assets and AI-linked projects, the surge in NMR highlights how quickly sentiment can shift in the crypto markets. While volatility remains a constant risk, the partnership between Numerai and JPMorgan underscores a broader trend: traditional finance and decentralized innovation are moving closer together.

For the AI token sector, now valued at nearly $30 billion, this alignment with Wall Street could prove to be the catalyst for further growth.
