Mozilla Launches AI Screening System to Block Crypto Scam Extensions on Firefox

In an effort to bolster user security amid persistent cryptocurrency scams, Mozilla has unveiled a new automated system designed to detect and block suspicious crypto wallet extensions before they are published to the Firefox Add-ons repository.

According to a recent Mozilla blog post, the new system scans all wallet-related browser extensions submitted to addons.mozilla.org. Extensions flagged by the system are temporarily withheld from publication and forwarded for human review. While Mozilla has not disclosed the exact criteria the tool uses—likely to prevent bad actors from gaming the system—the company confirms that it has already prevented hundreds of potentially fraudulent add-ons from reaching users.

Crypto wallet extensions have become an attractive vector for malicious actors looking to exploit the popularity of digital assets. Despite the decline of the crypto mining craze, phishing attempts, fake wallets, and scam apps persist as common threats. Firefox, as a major browser that does not rely on Chromium—the open-source foundation of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge—presents a unique challenge and opportunity in extension security.

The focus on wallet extensions makes sense given their high-risk nature, as they often handle sensitive user data and access to crypto funds.
