In a bold move to solidify its position in the digital asset space, Tokyo-based Metaplanet has issued 3.6 billion yen (approximately $24.8 million) in bonds to expand its Bitcoin holdings, now exceeding 5,000 BTC. The company, originally known for its hotel business, is increasingly making headlines for its strategic embrace of cryptocurrencies.

According to a statement released by the company, the entire bond issuance was acquired by EVO FUND. These zero-interest bonds will mature on October 31, 2025, unless the bondholder opts for early repayment. The funds raised are designated exclusively for Bitcoin purchases, following a plan previously disclosed by Metaplanet earlier this year.

This initiative marks another step in Metaplanet’s ongoing transformation into a Bitcoin-centric corporate entity. The company had previously outlined its intention to fund digital asset acquisitions through various equity instruments, including stock acquisition rights. With this latest bond issuance, Metaplanet is reinforcing that strategy by converting traditional financial instruments into direct exposure to Bitcoin.

Metaplanet plans to repay the bonds using capital raised from the exercise of its stock acquisition rights. This approach means the success of the repayment plan may depend on investor interest in Metaplanet’s equity-linked offerings. If the proceeds from those instruments surpass specific thresholds, the company retains the option to repay parts of the bond ahead of schedule.

Shares of Metaplanet responded positively to the news, closing at 428 yen—an 8.6% increase in the latest trading session. The market’s reaction reflects growing investor confidence in the company’s pivot toward Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset.

This strategy echoes the path taken by companies like MicroStrategy, which famously allocated billions of dollars into Bitcoin as a hedge against currency devaluation and a bet on long-term digital asset appreciation. While Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings are smaller in comparison, the intent is unmistakably aligned with a broader trend of corporate adoption of crypto assets.

By issuing zero-coupon bonds to fund Bitcoin purchases, Metaplanet is not only signaling its long-term faith in BTC but also demonstrating innovative financial engineering. The move suggests that traditional Japanese firms, once seen as conservative in financial matters, are beginning to explore more dynamic approaches to capital management in the digital age.

Metaplanet’s strategy may also serve as a case study for other corporations considering Bitcoin as part of their balance sheet. As more companies weigh the risks and rewards of integrating crypto assets into their financial ecosystems, Metaplanet’s bold stance could either be seen as visionary—or risky—depending on how the volatile crypto market unfolds.

Whether this aggressive Bitcoin accumulation will yield long-term success remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Metaplanet is not shying away from placing a significant bet on the future of decentralized finance.
