Mercado Bitcoin, one of Latin America’s largest digital asset platforms, has unveiled plans to tokenize over $200 million in real-world assets (RWAs) using the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The initiative, supported by Ripple, marks one of the region’s most ambitious efforts to integrate traditional financial instruments with public blockchain infrastructure.

In a July 4 blog post, Ripple confirmed it is facilitating Mercado Bitcoin’s onboarding onto the XRPL. The tokenization will include both fixed income and equity income instruments, all of which will be issued in a permissioned format to comply with regulatory standards across Latin America and Europe.

Already a global leader in private credit asset tokenization, Mercado Bitcoin aims to expand its influence by leveraging the XRPL’s capabilities to enhance liquidity, settlement speed, and accessibility of traditionally illiquid financial products. The XRPL is known for its suitability in tokenizing regulated financial instruments, offering fast, low-cost transactions on a public yet robustly secure blockchain.

“Across Latin America, we’re seeing forward-looking institutions explore how tokenization can improve access and efficiency in financial markets,” said Silvio Pegado, Ripple’s Managing Director for LATAM. “Mercado Bitcoin’s integration with the XRPL shows how public blockchain infrastructure is being trusted by institutions.”

This move also reflects broader trends in capital markets. As institutions look for ways to reduce transaction costs and streamline operations, tokenization has become a preferred route. Automating asset management and transfer through blockchain allows for faster settlement times, better transparency, and broader participation in secondary markets.

Ripple has seen increasing traction on the XRPL from financial entities. Earlier this year, Ondo Finance brought tokenized U.S. Treasuries to the XRPL, while Schuman Financial integrated its EURØP stablecoin, further embedding the ledger within institutional finance.

Mercado Bitcoin’s $200 million tokenization push is expected to accelerate the shift toward compliant, on-chain financial products in Latin America. If successful, the effort could signal a turning point in how traditional assets are issued, managed, and traded across emerging markets.
