Litecoin Joke Turns Into Culture War With XRP Army
Litecoin’s roast of XRP triggered a culture clash between communities, highlighting deeper ideological divides in crypto.
What began as a tongue-in-cheek jab from Litecoin’s official X account has spiraled into a cultural clash between two of crypto’s most vocal communities. The incident underscores not just the intensity of tribalism in the digital asset space, but also the very different identities that Litecoin and XRP have cultivated.
The spark came when Litecoin’s social media team mocked XRP with a comparison that likened the smell of comets to the idea of XRP tokens being more valuable than the money they move. To add fuel, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse was jokingly referred to as “Brad Garlicmouse.” The gag, however, didn’t land with XRP supporters, who quickly launched a counterattack.
XRP fans resurfaced old grievances, particularly Litecoin founder Charlie Lee’s controversial 2017 sale of his entire LTC holdings, which they argued demonstrated a lack of faith in his own creation. Some community members threatened to sell off Litecoin, while others doubled down on loyalty to XRP, painting Litecoin’s attempt at humor as desperation.
Rather than retreat, Litecoin doubled down. Its account pointed out that roasts and memes are part of its long-standing social strategy, noting that it had poked fun at other projects—including Solana and even itself—without sparking this level of outrage. The Litecoin team continued posting satirical comments, further stoking reactions from both sides.
The feud, while fueled by memes, highlights a deeper divide. XRP positions itself as an institutional crypto, aiming to streamline cross-border payments and appeal to banks and regulators. Litecoin, by contrast, frames itself as “digital silver,” rooted in peer-to-peer ideals and skepticism of centralized finance. These divergent visions for crypto’s future often create friction, and the latest spat made those differences sharply visible.
The drama also had market consequences. In the wake of the online exchange, both tokens slipped in price. Over the past week, XRP has fallen by roughly 6%, trading around $2.77, while Litecoin declined about 2%, hovering at $110.06. The timing fueled speculation that community infighting might weigh on investor sentiment, at least in the short term.
Meanwhile, rumors continue to swirl about Litecoin’s potential candidacy for a spot ETF, bolstered by its reputation as Bitcoin’s “digital silver.” XRP, however, has its own ETF ambitions, strengthened by Ripple’s improved regulatory standing after its legal victory over the SEC. These parallel narratives suggest that the rivalry between the two coins is unlikely to subside anytime soon.
What started as a playful roast has evolved into a symbolic tug-of-war over identity, legitimacy, and vision in the crypto world. Whether the episode fades into meme history or sparks a longer rivalry, it reflects how digital assets are shaped not only by markets and technology, but also by the passions of the communities that defend them.
