Litecoin, one of the oldest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, has taken a major leap into blockchain programmability with the official launch of LitVM, its first zero-knowledge (ZK) Layer-2 rollup chain. The announcement, made at the annual Litecoin Summit in Las Vegas, marks a transformative moment for a network long known for simplicity and transaction speed.

Developed by Lunar Digital Assets in collaboration with BitcoinOS and Polygon’s Chain Development Kit (CDK), LitVM is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This breakthrough brings smart contract functionality to the Litecoin ecosystem for the first time, enabling support for decentralized applications (dApps), tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), and stablecoins.

According to Edan Yago, Head of Litecoin ZK Development, LitVM is “the first true ZK rollup” to function within a UTXO-based blockchain. This implementation maintains Litecoin’s foundational commitment to security while expanding its technical capabilities.

LitVM’s architecture includes built-in access to AggLayer, a protocol enabling trustless cross-chain liquidity and composability. Features like time-locked tokenized assets and cultural tokens such as Runes and Lordinals are also supported, opening new utility for users and developers alike.

Roc Zacharias, CEO of Lunar Digital Assets, emphasized that this shift aligns Litecoin with the current Layer-2 evolution across leading blockchain networks. He noted that Ethereum and Bitcoin Layer-2 chains currently hold over $12 billion in TVL, and LitVM aims to offer similar scale and utility for Litecoin holders and developers.

The Litecoin Foundation has formally backed the initiative, calling it a direct response to developer demand for programmability. Litecoin’s founder Charlie Lee echoed this sentiment, assuring that the network’s principles of decentralization and stability will remain intact while welcoming a new era of on-chain functionality.

As crypto networks race to expand usability and infrastructure, LitVM positions Litecoin to play a central role in the next wave of blockchain innovation—merging legacy security with cutting-edge programmability.
