Lighter Launches BTC and ETH Binary Options on Core Blockchain

Binary options for Bitcoin and Ethereum are now live on Core blockchain through Lighter, a derivatives protocol offering Up/Down contracts that settle winning positions at exactly 1 USDC per share.
The structure is deliberately simple. Traders pick a direction, fund the position in full, and either collect 1 USDC per winning share or lose their stake. No leverage. No liquidations. No margin calls. That last part is the point: Lighter is pitching these contracts as a clean, bounded-risk product in a market where perpetual futures can wipe accounts in minutes.
Full collateralization is a meaningful design choice. Most derivatives in DeFi run on leverage, which amplifies both gains and losses and introduces liquidation risk when prices move sharply. By requiring complete upfront funding, Lighter sidesteps that complexity entirely. The tradeoff is capital efficiency. A trader putting up $1,000 to potentially win $1,000 is playing a very different game than someone running 10x leverage on a perp. Sophisticated desks chasing maximum return-on-capital will likely stay on their usual platforms. The product targets a different participant: traders who want defined risk, or those migrating from prediction market platforms like Polymarket who are comfortable with binary payouts.
Binary options and prediction markets share the same fundamental mechanic: a fixed outcome, a fixed payout, a yes-or-no bet. Lighter's launch moves it meaningfully closer to that product category, which has seen substantial volume growth over the past two years. Polymarket processed over $1 billion in volume during the 2024 U.S. election cycle alone, demonstrating real appetite for binary-style instruments among crypto-native users.
Core is a Bitcoin-aligned layer-1 that uses a hybrid consensus model combining proof-of-work and delegated proof-of-stake. The blockchain has been building out its DeFi layer steadily, and a derivatives protocol adding BTC and ETH binary options adds meaningful product depth to that stack. USDC as the settlement currency keeps things clean on the counterparty side and aligns with the broader DeFi trend of stablecoin-denominated settlement.
Regulatory risk hangs over the product, as it does over all binary options in crypto. The CFTC has historically treated binary options as commodity interests subject to federal oversight, and several offshore platforms offering similar products to U.S. users have faced enforcement actions. Lighter has not publicly addressed how it plans to handle jurisdictional compliance, and that gap is worth watching as the product scales.
The launch is a clear attempt to widen Lighter's addressable market beyond traders already comfortable with perpetuals and order-book derivatives. Whether the no-leverage structure draws in the prediction market crowd or simply limits uptake from capital-efficient traders remains the open question. The 1 USDC payout mechanic is clean enough to understand in thirty seconds. Getting meaningful liquidity behind it is the harder problem.
