Kraken Backs Argentum AI to Build Decentralized Compute Marketplace
Kraken leads Argentum AI’s funding to launch a decentralized compute marketplace where idle GPUs become revenue streams.
As demand for computing power surges, a new entrant is betting that decentralization can solve one of the tech industry’s biggest bottlenecks. Argentum AI, a Menlo Park–based startup, has secured an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round led by Kraken, aiming to create a blockchain-powered marketplace where anyone can monetize idle GPUs and data center capacity.
The round, announced on October 1, also included contributions from Banyan Ventures and angel investors Victor Morganstern and Todd Bensen. Argentum AI will use the capital to accelerate the rollout of its decentralized compute platform, designed to function as an open exchange for computational workloads.
At its core, Argentum AI offers an on-chain bidding system: organizations post tasks—ranging from AI training and 3D rendering to scientific simulations—while providers bid to execute them. Smart contracts on Ethereum manage escrow and settlement, ensuring that payment is released only upon verified task completion.
The model reframes computing capacity as a liquid, tradable resource. Instead of relying solely on hyperscale cloud providers, clients can source on-demand resources from a global pool of contributors. According to CEO Andrew Sobko, the issue is not just raw computational scarcity but rigidity. “In the immediate term, we see a massive opportunity for bridging flexible needs with stranded compute capacity,” Sobko said. Looking ahead, the company plans to work with GPU manufacturers on monetization strategies for second-life hardware, reducing costs for enterprises.
Argentum AI brands itself as a “human-friendly, AI-powered compute marketplace.” Unlike platforms that automate away human decision-making, Argentum combines oversight with algorithmic efficiency. Clients set requirements and maintain final approval, while an embedded AI assistant analyzes completed jobs to improve future task matching, pricing, and efficiency. The company believes this hybrid model will accelerate adoption by making decentralized computing both transparent and adaptive.
The initial target markets include fintech firms, banks, and gaming companies—industries with fluctuating computational needs that are often poorly served by rigid vendor contracts. By acting as a neutral, on-demand layer, Argentum AI hopes to challenge entrenched cloud incumbents like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
The ecosystem will be powered by AGP (Argentum AI Point), the project’s native token. AGP is used to pay for workloads, reward providers, and incentivize participation through staking. Token holders can unlock discounts, boost visibility in the marketplace, and participate in governance decisions. With a fixed supply of one billion tokens, Argentum is positioning AGP as both a utility and governance asset, aligning long-term incentives across its network.
For Kraken, backing Argentum reflects its growing interest in infrastructure plays that bridge crypto and AI. As GPUs become scarcer and costs escalate, the promise of a decentralized marketplace for compute could resonate not only with crypto-native firms but also with mainstream industries desperate for flexible, cost-efficient resources.
