Vitalik Buterin has unveiled Kohaku, an open-source privacy framework designed to address one of Ethereum’s longstanding shortcomings: the network’s lack of built-in confidentiality for everyday users. Presented live at Devcon, the initiative represents a clear shift in the Ethereum ecosystem’s priorities, with privacy no longer treated as an experimental add-on but as a foundational requirement of a mature, global financial system.

Buterin described Ethereum as being in “the very last mile stage” of its privacy evolution, acknowledging that the network remains behind where it should be in protecting user activity. The point, he argued, is not merely technical. Privacy and security must advance together if Ethereum is to support meaningful applications without exposing users to unnecessary risks or surveillance. His message builds on recent statements from the Ethereum Foundation, which has increasingly framed privacy as a fundamental right rather than a niche preference.

Kohaku introduces a modular collection of tools meant to give developers the ability to build privacy-preserving wallets and applications without relying on centralized intermediaries. The repository, still a work in progress, integrates components from existing privacy protocols such as Railgun and Privacy Pools. These tools allow users to obscure their onchain activity while producing proofs that distinguish legitimate privacy use from illicit obfuscation. Privacy Pools, for example, uses association lists to prevent bad actors from mixing their assets with compliant users—a design aimed at satisfying both privacy advocates and regulators.

During a November 16 demo, a Kohaku-powered wallet showcased how funds visible on the blockchain can be shielded using Railgun. The long-term vision is to make this capability a default option across mainstream Ethereum wallets, including those like MetaMask and Rainbow. This would mark a significant evolution from today’s environment, where privacy requires extra steps and specialist tools. In Buterin’s words, “Privacy is freedom,” a guardrail that lets individuals operate without constant scrutiny from centralized or decentralized authorities.

Kohaku does not emerge in isolation. The Ethereum Foundation has recently reorganized its research arms to focus more squarely on privacy, launching the 47-person Privacy Cluster dedicated to making confidentiality a first-class feature of the network. the former Privacy & Scaling Explorations group has rebranded as the Privacy Stewards of Ethereum, a move that signals its transition from blue-sky research to implementing practical features such as private voting and confidential DeFi.

Ethereum’s expanding push comes at a moment when global regulatory concerns continue to shape privacy technology. Kohaku’s emphasis on verifiable “proof of innocence” reflects a pragmatic attempt to balance user protection with compliance realities. The project’s modularity means future additions—such as mixnets for network-layer anonymity or zero-knowledge-powered browsers—could further extend privacy beyond transaction execution into broader interaction layers.

Kohaku marks a decisive pivot in how Ethereum envisions its future. If successful, it may transform private-by-default tooling from an experimental aspiration into a widely adopted standard, reshaping how users interact with the world’s largest programmable blockchain.
