Kazakhstan Bets on Digital Future with Evo Stablecoin Backed by Solana and Mastercard
Kazakhstan launches Evo, a tenge-backed stablecoin with Solana, Mastercard, and Eurasian Bank as partners.
Kazakhstan has taken a bold step into the digital finance arena with the launch of Evo (KZTE), a tenge-pegged stablecoin developed in partnership with Solana, Mastercard, and Eurasian Bank. The initiative was unveiled on September 23 under the National Bank of Kazakhstan’s regulatory sandbox, signaling the country’s intent to position itself at the forefront of blockchain adoption in Central Asia.
The new stablecoin is issued by the local crypto exchange Intebix and will operate on the Solana blockchain, chosen for its scalability and low transaction costs. With Eurasian Bank acting as one of the first financial institutions to pilot the asset, and Mastercard integrating it into payment rails, the project represents one of the most ambitious public-private collaborations in the region’s financial sector.
National Bank Governor Timur Suleimenov described the initiative as part of Kazakhstan’s broader digital transformation agenda. “We see growing interest in digital currencies and blockchain solutions worldwide. Kazakhstan is also taking a step forward: today, we are launching the first national stablecoin backed by the tenge. This will expand financial opportunities, speed up payments, and improve the security of transfers,” he said.
The introduction of Evo marks a significant experiment in how central bank-backed stablecoins can interact with the commercial banking and payments ecosystem. By tethering the token directly to the tenge and supporting it with regulatory oversight, authorities are attempting to avoid the volatility that has plagued other crypto assets, while ensuring that both businesses and consumers gain access to a reliable digital settlement tool.
Eurasian Bank is positioning itself as an early adopter of the technology. Lyazzat Satieva, chair of the bank’s management board, emphasized the potential impact on the national economy: “The launch of the Evo stablecoin symbolizes a new financial Kazakhstan. We are confident that in the coming years, it will become a standard for settlements across key industries. This will speed up payments, make them more convenient and secure, and strengthen trust in the financial system, as the asset is fully backed by the tenge and is supported by the regulator.”
The participation of Mastercard adds an important layer of legitimacy, making Kazakhstan one of the few countries to test stablecoin integration with global payment networks. If successful, the pilot could pave the way for faster cross-border transactions, retail adoption, and greater financial inclusion in a country where cash remains dominant.
Globally, stablecoins are becoming a key battleground for governments and private companies alike. While the U.S. and the European Union debate regulatory frameworks, Kazakhstan has opted to experiment in real time, embedding blockchain technology into its financial infrastructure. The Evo pilot will be closely watched, not only in Central Asia but also by regulators and institutions worldwide seeking to understand how national stablecoins can coexist with existing monetary systems.
Kazakhstan’s Evo may be just a pilot, but its symbolic weight is clear: the country is determined to showcase itself as a digital innovator rather than a follower, betting that trust, regulation, and blockchain efficiency can define the next era of money.
