Hut 8 is making one of the most consequential strategic pivots yet seen in the crypto mining industry, signaling a shift away from pure Bitcoin exposure toward becoming a large-scale developer of energy and data center infrastructure for artificial intelligence. The company announced a sweeping partnership with AI model developer Anthropic and compute provider Fluidstack to build as much as 2.3 gigawatts of AI-focused data center capacity across the United States, a move that sent its shares sharply higher.

The agreement positions Hut 8 as the developer behind a multi-phase rollout of AI infrastructure, beginning with a flagship deployment at its River Bend campus in Louisiana. Initial plans call for between 245 megawatts and up to 2,295 megawatts of total capacity, structured across several tranches that allow the project to scale from an early-stage deployment to full gigawatt-level operations over time.

The first phase centers on a 245-megawatt IT deployment supported by approximately 330 megawatts of utility power. Hut 8 will develop the site and underlying infrastructure, while Fluidstack will operate high-performance compute clusters serving Anthropic’s AI workloads. Construction of the initial data halls is expected to be completed by early 2027, setting a near-term milestone for the partnership.

Beyond the initial buildout, the structure of the deal leaves ample room for expansion. Fluidstack has secured a right of first offer for up to an additional 1,000 megawatts of IT capacity at River Bend, contingent on further power development. A third tranche gives Hut 8 and Anthropic the option to jointly evaluate and develop up to 1,050 megawatts of additional capacity across Hut 8’s broader pipeline of sites.

Financially, the project represents a transformational opportunity for the company. The River Bend facility is anchored by a 15-year triple-net lease with Fluidstack valued at roughly $7 billion over the base term. If all renewal options are exercised, total contract value could rise to approximately $17.7 billion. Alphabet-owned Google is providing a financial backstop covering lease payments and certain operating obligations during the base term, underscoring the strategic importance of securing long-duration AI compute capacity, according to Reuters.

Markets reacted swiftly. Hut 8 shares surged more than 20 percent in premarket trading following the announcement, extending a rally that has lifted the stock by roughly 80 percent so far this year. Investors appear to be rewarding the company’s transition toward AI infrastructure at a moment when access to power, cooling, and suitable real estate has become a critical bottleneck for leading model developers.

“Scaling frontier AI infrastructure is, at its core, a power challenge,” CEO Asher Genoot said, highlighting Hut 8’s power-first approach to development and its effort to integrate energy sourcing, data center design, and compute deployment into a single operating platform.

For Anthropic, the partnership provides a new channel to bring capacity online as demand for advanced models accelerates. “Hut 8’s ability to source and deliver infrastructure at scale provides the runway necessary to continue advancing the capabilities of our models,” said James Bradbury, Anthropic’s head of compute.

The deal reflects a broader industry shift as former crypto miners increasingly repurpose energy-intensive assets for AI workloads. While execution risks remain, particularly around power delivery and construction timelines, Hut 8 now finds itself at the intersection of energy, AI, and digital infrastructure, a position that could redefine its role well beyond Bitcoin mining.
